Can anyone help in identifying the component circled in red? It looks like an oil filter sandwich plate? On my car the hose circled in green (which comes off a t-piece from the top rad hose) is bunged and cable tied to the front of the block!

is an oil-water heat exchanger, made by modine, they can leak internally causing oil to enter the cooling system (water tends not to enter the oil as the oil is at much higher pressure)

when this happens however you tend to get a frothy rusty mess in the cooling system which is not particularly effective at cooling and headgaskets can be blown eventually.

you'll find it on servicebox under the lubrication headings.

Sorry I am going to hijack this thread a bit, I hope you don't mind. This is also a massive long shot if anyone will know this.

Does anyone know the internal diameter of the hoses marked 1 & 3 in this diagram. I want to blank them off to get rid of the heat exchanger I have cable-tied to the engine right now....awful I know.

Presumably the heat exchange does actually do something, does anyone know how effective it is? If I were to remove it and just run an oil cooler, would it have an impact?

I *think* they are 1/2" but I'm not absolutely 100% sure though.

It does indeed do something, helps the oil hest up as well as taking heat out of it. However, just running a cooler on it's own wouldn't cause bother, many here have already done this.
