Hi all,
Recently bought a GTI6 and was wondering what Phase I have.
1st date of registration was August 1997.
Also it doesn't have the GTI6 badge on the rear of the vehicle and from google searche of images and reading about the badges on here this is still confusing. Should it have the badge?

I'm just about to get a full service using genuine parts plus change the cambelt and water pump. I'm going to use a genuine water pump but is there anything else I should be changing at the same time? I'm reading 136 teeth or 137. Can I use either?

The clutch is slipping so a new clutch is also going to be added however the pedal is heavy as hell. Is this normal or is this another issue I have to sort?
Or will the new clutch and new cable sort the heavy pedal?

I rang my main dealer and there response was all the work will cost more than the GTI is worth so confidence in them has wavered somewhat.
My response was that's irrelevant isn't it, it's my money.

I want to do all the work and the same time but only do it once so any help/advice would be appreciated.

I'll post some photos once it's back up and running as it looks a bit of a dog at present.

Thanks.

It's either a phase 1 or scrap. all 306 s have heavy clutches and notchey gear boxes and only work short periods of time between masses of money being spent on them. But enjoy it's not a ford

Welcome.

If you don't have either of these, you have a phase 1.

Welcome. Post some pictures and keep updating your progress.

Definitely the best idea to use OE parts for cam belt service. There is a list of parts on here somewhere to replace while doing cam belt for peace of mind, such as crank pulley and accessory belt.

Welcome to the club! Wave

You will have either a phase 1 or 2, more than likely an early 2.

New clutch and cable will solve the heavy pedal yes, plus the cambelt will 99% be a 136 tooth.
You can use either belt, although they need different pulleys and setting up - if you already have the 136 then stick with that, in my opinion it is a better setup anyway.

Stan.

Lol more than likely you have an early phase 2. Less likely but could also be a late registered phase 1. Mine is R reg and first registered 1st August 1997 phase 2. If nothing has changed from factory you will need the 136 kit as the belt will have a manual tensioner.

Are you planning on doing the belt change yourself?

No, it is going into Pugbitz in the new year to have all the work carried out.

Will I need anything else other than the Cam-belt and new water pump for the change?

You need the full kit including idler and tensioner and check the crank pulley for slippage

New cable didnt sort out my heavy clutch. Removing the old clutch revealed lots of life left in both the plate and cover but they had been fitted for a long time and work hardened!
New clutch plate, cover and cable needed, just to rule the lot out!

Welcome btw

New cable made a small difference on mine, but a new full clutch kit plus the clutch fork bushes made a world of difference. A week in and my left leg is still adjusting to the difference.
