I am working on some wide track bits at the minute, but it's for the 406 hubs, since I'm driving a barge these days.

It's okay, it's covering up the smell from the back seat.

Well this thread has turned interesting!

Wayne is the king at turning up trumps to be fair. He played a blinder for me on front coilovers only this week (cheers mate) so it can be done and is freely available; just not where you might typically look. (how many of you have searched Bellstein on eBay instead of Bilstein?)

I think we should respect folks ability to have a crack at it themselves, whether DIY or mates' rates and other contacts as not being somehow worse than an off the shelf product - or fold over a speed bump. There's some clever people out there modding cars by themselves.

As Wayne has highlighted the Ford front end is currently being made by specialist engineers at realistic prices (i.e. is not old beaten up kit) and offers a high degree of compatibility, parts availability and is eminently adjustable. What's being made today by specialists is often better than what was made nearly 20yrs ago now by the original manufacturer. Times move on. It's also highly capable kit.

I think what Satchell and the like offer is great, but yes it's possible to replicate/improve either cheaper or more readily. Just depends on your approach (buy/DIY). As already highlighted the Satchell set up doesn't get you driveshafts, extended TRE's either (no knowledge on ARB compatibility) so £2k still doesn't get you across the line.

The money thing is interesting; many of us are in 306's because of our age, it's cheap and so on. It's not the cheapest way to bhp by a long way, but it's a very cheap way to FUN, and that's where most of us start. If we can keep a lid on costs and have fun either with the process of building it, or the outcome, then we're on a winner. That's it for me.. I also have an Impreza Type R and M3 with more money in them, plus a diesel daily estate, so the 306 has to be good value to keep it's place, and for me to remain married!

Peace everyone. The destination is the same, but we're all here to enjoy the journey which ever route it takes us.
Iain

As Ive said already Over 3 years I've spent far to much on a 20yr old car & I would do it all over again as the Fun it's bought to me personally is priceless.
I've had help from mostly everyone commenting in this thread & more that haven't ...Thank you guys Thumbs up ..
I've copied ideas off others & come up with some of my own on the way & did as much of my own work as knowledge would allow me ....even surprised myself at times LOL

My view is ....as in life we all go on our (own) journey ...I enjoy doing things my way if possible & that's ME ....everyone to there own I say LOL
I love Ollies car & I love Satchels car & I love Aarons / Chris Lapit's car & Mei & Wayne's & Jeffers & Stephens & Russain & Davids & loads of others ...but they are not for me & mine not for them !
It's my personal journey & ive loved every second /min/ hour / of it ...but hated spending /borrowing earning & seeing the money going though......

This is my view only .....yes ...I've done it at stupid expense & 200% agree could of done it for 1/4 of the price but I chose this direction for me & I'll never see any off this money back ....but (hey ho ) ....I've buried three friends in 16weeks...much younger than me they always said about saving & not wasting money on stupid things & it NOW makes me feel I've done the right thing for ME ...
(Pete on here even said he was de-friending me as so many were dying )

Hope you all enjoy your personal Journeys however you get there....cheap / Expensive or for free even ...
I'll hopefully see loads of you next year at Asst tracks Thumbs up

You can then say it should go well or better for how much he's spent on it Whistle

Laugh my ass off

my point is where all shooting for the same goal and would class a lot of you lot like my second family
(more like distant cousins)
but we all count on each other for support in one form or another!,
weather it be to palm our crap off so we can buy new crap, ask for advice or even just to kill time!
across us all we have such wide and varied talents, we're also all wildly different people but all share the same passion in one form or another!

just gets my back up when some fat cat comes to the table with a do you know who I am attitude as if they should have a bigger slice of cake then the next man!
I'm confident we should be able to do this for a reasonable budget!
I want to make this work not because I want to get rich but because I want to be involved in something great!

i'm working on the body panels I just need to get timings and bits together and a place to work sorted,
then I can price accordingly without plucking a figure from the sky!
my prices will be fair and justified just as they were with other things i've done in the past!

we have some great members on here (and I don't mean the Penis type,.... although? LOL) but I believe we already have everything we need!

Thumbs up

Just some 3 point wishbones with spherical bearings in the end so I can ditch the 406 balljoints (swapping for a solid machined piece) and bring the rollcentre up/track scrub down.

This sounds interesting Phil. I guess they sound a lot like the original PTS 205 items - a triangle of T45 tubes? Think they used poly bushes at the subframe ends though.. Actually I think Wayne is running these on his.

They sound like a good solution. Would love to see your progress - particularly if you thought a small production run would be possible???? Big grin

I wish I had never asked how much the setup was now lol

Unfortunately my days of spending large amounts of money on the 306 has come to an end (well for the next year or so anyway)

Luckily for me iv already got the front wide track in the form of the dimma kit.
Now I know terry is no chassis engineer or suspension guru, my only gripe is the bump steer and roll centre of the dimma kit.
Unfortunately Bridgecraft are not doing a bolt on kit but have mentioned that a bespoke setup can be achieved so maybe that's one route I can go to keep the cost down.

I was going to go down the route of different hubs like the 307/406 and hopefully get some standard 306 ball joints modified to take Spherical bearings for the above hubs.

Major down side of that option for me is iv already got my wheels in certain offset and have my ap racing brake setup, both of which would be no good with the 307/406 hubs.

I think my only option is to use Bridgecraft and see what they can offer, hopefully it will be a good deal as I put a fair few ppl their way for the rear wide track setup but we will see

There was a guy on here who basically made a part that holds a spherical bearing but it attaches to a wishbone with the usual three bolts. I can't remember his username but i think he was from somewhere sunny, not sure if midlife didn't end up with them at some point.
That's the route i'd take if you want to try and keep your wishbones as they are, then you can just get a spacer made to lower the pivot point where the wishbone meets the hub if you go for a 307/406 hub.

Where abouts do you want your roll centre to be on yours?
According to my measurements (and assuming i've done the calculations right) the roll centre on my standard gti6 is roughly around 196mm off the ground on the centre line when the car is static.
I've not got round to trying to get the spreadsheet to dynamically calculate where the roll centre moves to once the chassis starts moving about when it rolls.

You can do like i did to measure your bump steer (think i did a bit of a write up on it in my project thread). You may need to buy a m14x1.5 rose joint to replace your track rod end temporarily, then use a bit of m10 studding and half nuts to change the spacing between your hub carrier and rose joint until you've tweaked the severity of the bump steer. Obviously don't drive the car with it like this, i just clamped a mirror to where the wheel would be and aimed a laser at it then kept marking the reflected beam on a piece of paper, with the springs off the dampers and using a jack under the hub to raise and lower it to simulate compression and what not.
If you do this method then you can measure the distance between the hub carrier and rose joint as you'll want a spacer this size, the hub carrier will need machining out to get rid of the standard taper fitting like a normal track rod end has. I'm sure Allan/Bridgecraft could knock you up said spacers for a reasonable price once you know how much you want to move the track rod by, you'd be best going to them as they know what they're on about when it comes to stuff like this.

To be fair you are waaaay ahead of me....
I haven't even started to look into the roll centre height or the height the track rod needs to be for bump steer.

I need to get the car to the height I want first which unfortunately means tubbing the front inner arches.

I really want to crack on with the car but really need to finish the house first.

307 hub to caliper lug dimension is the same as a 306, so brakes will fit fine.

But my wheels won't fit with out even thicker spacers which I really don't want to do for obvious reasons

dont get what you mean, they'll need spacers on a 306 hub too then?

Thought someone mentioned the offset on the 307 hub was between 20-30 depending on rim width.
My wheels are et15 with 20mm spacers to give -5, so I guess I would need a 25-35mm spacers for the wheel to sit in the same place.
Bare with me as iv had a few but I "think" I'm looking at that right?
