Team,

A proposal for an addition to the excellent FAQ resource.

We hear a bit about what to do about starting a car after it has been in storage for a few months, to prevent it firing until the oil pressure is up to prevent excessive engine wear in those first few seconds. Some mention disconnecting the crank sensor.

For people like me who are not conversant with these methods, could some of you whip up a FAQ maybe with some pics to describe how to disconnect something to enable it to turn over for a bit before starting?

Cheers.

Why disconnect the crank sensor? If it was me I'd pull the plugs out and disconnect the fuel pump relay. The engine will spin over with minimal pressure on anything and will still build oil pressure, rather than disturb the crank sensor. Personally that's the route I'd take and in fact have done in the past. Thumbs up

I'd just tap the crash switch or unplug it in the engine bay = job done but then I'd just fire the cvnt up and not worry about it

Whenever I've needed to do this (which was frequently, over ~4 years) I just disconnected each of the wiring plugs from the 4 injectors. Takes less than 10 seconds and prevents fuel from entering the engine in the same way as removing relays.

That's the way I did it, too, after replacing my broken engine. Disconnect each injector's plug, remove spark plugs, squirt about a teaspoonful of engine oil in each cylinder through the spark plug holes. Wait a minute or two for the oil to flow round the bore and then let it crank with throttle wide open so there is minimal load on the engine until the oil pressure lamp goes out. When cranking, give it a break every 5 seconds or so.

No idea if that is the best way or not, that's why I'm asking.

I own a 306 that this man put back on the road after 9 years of being sat on a driveway. Not sure what he did on first startup.

Engine is great and runs quietly.

This is the absolute best method. Yes

Checked oil levels put a new battery on it fuel in and turned it over / fired up on the button did turn it over for a while with out any fuel so I guess oil would of been round the engine

Pull the fuel pump relay and crank it for 10 - 15 secs?
