Ultimately, reviewing my issues regarding brake fade found I had melted and mid-shaped my brake fluid reservoir cap so we put it down to boiling my fluid. It was only standard fluid which hadn't been changed in my ownership of 3 years at this point. Of course we have completely changed the fluid now for Millers racing stuff I believe. Pretty much done a track day at the Porsche testing centre and not a problem at all Thumbs up

Aaron, what brake setup was Gary running on the R32? He had the same issue couple miles down the road.

He was running the exact same set up the golf touring car ran. His faded as the clutch is run by the same fluid as the brakes and when the garage did the clutch they didn't use the racing fluid that he had in before.

I use a dot 4 race oil and that's also fine. Has a higher boiling point than dot5

I've been looking at this. Godspeed brakes also recommend the CL racing brake fluid

What you are boiling in 3 year old brake fluid is the water content it has accumulated. TBH even if you had brand new fluid in there I can't see you getting enough heat into it via the pads to travel a meter through copper lines and then the master cylinder to melt a plastic cap with a distortion point in excess of 150 degrees celcius.

I also don't see what the melted cap has to do with your brakes not working properly? It only seals to keep air/water out, it has nothing to do with brake effectiveness. In the short term your brakes would work just fine without the cap.

But new, better fluid is the right thing to doThumbs up

I was just putting 'brake fade' and 'melted reservoir cap' together and getting boiled fluid. Perhaps the exhaust manifold heat had melted the cap even though I have plenty of cooling for that. Sorry for the confusion but I wasn't trying to imply that the loose cap was affecting the use of the brakes Thumbs up

re reading your original post again I can see that. And that may well have been the cause of your brake fade. If you have a loose cap then air/water can get in and reducde the boiling point, especially if you were using 5.1? Dunno if you were but as it is not hygroscopic then water still gets in but instead of being absorbed it just concentrates at low points in the braking system, and the lowest point is the calipers.

that's 5.0 (silicone) not 5.1.
