Have a wining noise coming from the gearbox believe it to be the diff possibly
What is it likely to be
Not wheel bearings but relevant to road speed pushing in the clutch makes no difference its not drastic but is sliwly getting louder

Any thoughts ???

How easy is it to change the diff and bearings whilst in situe
Cheers Smile

ha ha not quite that easy!

drain oil
remove shafts
remove battery/box/ecu
disconnect manifold cat pipe
remove gear linkages
std airbox out
support engine from above
remove top gearbox mount
release lower mount
swing engine forward untill oil filter touches radiator

you then get enough room to remove the diff casing without dropping the subframe from bellow

done it 3 times this way now fitting my ATB
got it down to a 4 hour job with no hold ups

the diff case i sealed with a film of liquide gasket,
there is an oring seal around the speedo drive nose
the 2 drive shaft seals
2ltrs of oil
bearings can be found on ebay easily most peugeot box's use the same diff bearings for what i can see but do check

may also be worth getting a set of crownwheel bolts if you are removing the crownwheel from the diff itself as you may damage the threads if you dont crack them all first before winding one out
crown wheel bolts part number 9800266980 £1.72 each
speedo seal 264512 is 76p+vat

Final drive half housing bolts, M10; 41Nm 30lbft
Final drive half housing bolts, M7; 12Nm 9lbft.
Speedometer pinion adaptor; 12Nm 9lbft
Final drive extension housing bolts ; 15nm 11lbft

some box's will have a shim on the long shaft side bearing some wont
only fit what is there as if you put a shim in you need to change the nose casting as that sets endfloat

wondered what the hell you meant, wining.

ohhh, WHINING, check the wear on the crownwheel itself, if that's rough then you'll need another box.

Could be the main bearings or release bearing. Best put it on a two poster ramp to check where the noise is coming from.

id be inclined to drain the oil to see how much metal is in it
then try with some new oil as genuine oil is cheap

you'll always have some noise if its stripped out and solid rubber mounts.

should try a saxo with bodies, sequential box and a rose jointed torque link and metal jointed suspension...

Wow surely easier to just undo a few bolts and whip the subframe out and have room to swing a cat?

Did mine with the box on the floor as wanted it out to paint it anyway but if I hadn't wanted to do that I'd have just taken the subframe out as it's like half hours work at the very max on a ramp with air tools.

But while on the subject of diffs and what not how did people torque up the crown wheel bolts? Found it a nightmare to hold the doff still enough to get to proper torque. Debating putting it in a vice to hold it still and thought.....NOPE... £700 of diff LOL

Locked the box in gear and got someone to hold the diff down while I torqued it and still jumped out. Didn't get the specified torque but not miles off and plenty of thread lock.

Has been fine for 2 years now.

Superb cheers bud looks stright forward how tight are the bearings
How tricky to remove and install new ones
And do they seat all the way or will a small gap be required

you'll need a puller and a press to fit them, they seat fully on the diff.

Yup don't think they were very tight to press on mind but still interference fit.

Haha I probably should have just used the vice but thought better of it LOL

Careful you don't slip and torque your nuts.
