OK, so it's not a GTi or Rallye.. but thought I'd start a project on my cab as some may be interested, I'm on here because I find this forum a better fit for me than others like 306oc or the cab forum.

So this car came about from me needing something on a small budget, however I was determined to get something interesting, my first car was a 205 GTi, I later had a 205 CJ and also an S1 106 rallye (GTi engined) so not new to Peugeots, but this was all some time ago now!

I hadn't been considering 306s given GTi-6s and Rallye's were out of my budget, but then I stumbled across 306 cabs, which are at rock bottom right now! Whilst good in a way for buying, it also means most are total dogs with owners reluctant to spend anything meaningful on them, the majority don't have working roofs either.

Still after a bit of browsing I found a PH3 2.0 16v (XSi engine) in Sundance and in the spec I wanted (i.e no aircon/no nasty leather), the last owner had owned it for 10 years and it'd been dry stored for the last 4 as part of his car collection, it all sounded rather promising and I was hoping it was going to be one of those times where you get a truly great deal!

Alas when I finally saw it, whilst it was clear the owner was fond of the car, it basically hadn't seen bugger all work in the 10 years they had it, the previous owner owned a haulage company and said it was serviced when required, which I believe but this would have only been the bare minimum. Still, I was prepared for it needing a bit of recommissioning, and to be fair the guy had just bought a new genuine roof ECU for it so at least the roof was working. The bodywork was also acceptable and most importantly it was very good underneath, no rot/bent sills etc. It also had freshly refurbed wheels, the roof itself was in very good order, and on the plus side of it maybe not having received the maintenance it should have, it was nicely original.

So the bad bits and what was done to sort..

Tyres - 10 year old budgets bar one and very badly cracked. Replaced with Toyo Proxes in correct 195/55r15 all round

Brakes - shot! Replaced with Brembo Discs and Pagid pads all round

Misfire/Hesitation - took a best guess at the coilpack being at fault, and I got lucky, old one was the original Sagem & new Bremi coilpack completely solved it :-) put some Bosch super 4s in while I was there

Exhaust rusted/blowing - new backbox fitted

Radio not working - no code - got a replacement off Ebay with code, luckily electric aerial works a treat!

Gearnob coming off in my hand! fitted aftermarket Leather Momo gearnob to solve

Fuel gauge not working - still not working but won't be long.. wiring is good, looks to be sender

With the main issues out the way and the car now 10 times better to drive, I set about sorting bits for a good engine refresh and a couple of little mods, this included an oil change with gen filter, a cambelt kit, new aux belt & idler/tensioner, gen waterpump, gen thermostat, and new engine mounts, the mods were a OMP strut brace and Miles gear linkages.

The car went in to C.G cars/Carl aka MechanicalRepairs on here for the engine work and a few investigations (fuel gauge etc) on Friday, it was a 260 mile round trip for me but well worth it as he did a top job. And I have to thank this forum as I wouldn't of found Carl otherwise.

Unfortunately the gear linkages were wrong but everything else was done and Carl fixed a few little bits he found as he went along (the benefit of him having lots of spares!)

So that brings us up to date and the old girl is now on the edge of being a decent example - to be honest compared to most of these I guess its a bloody good one even now! - once the fuel gauge, gear linkages and a few other little bits are sorted I'll be pretty much on top of it for now, with bigger jobs like some bodywork and replacing some seals/rear window to happen later on.

I've also done a three stage treatment on the hood and cleaned the interior from top to bottom, more work to do on the outside though as only had a quick (desperately needed) polish so far.

So here are a few pics, not the best but you get the idea.

Future mods will be Bilstein B6 dampers with GTi springs, OMP lower brace, steering wheel retrim perhaps with yellow stitching, some custom bracing to reduce the scuttle shake as much as poss and a few other bits.

Nice work! i love Sundance as a colour and this looks to have come up really nice...

Stop fiddling around and drop a proper engine in it so you can use your new suspension properly Devil

Thanks Smile lol to be fair engine wise I'm just happy its the 2.0 version, with the engine servicing bits done and lots of super unleaded later its going well and is plenty in a cab. Imo before chucking a GTi-6 lump in the car would need plenty of strengthening and suspension upgrades to make it work properly.

I am surprised I haven't seen any decent trackday cabs yet, it may sound ridiculous but given how cheap you can get them, I'd love to strip one completely, fit a proper cage, then a GTI 6 lump or stick with XSI lump to start followed by the usual 306 track mods. Would be great fun being open top and pretty unusual!

Well you wouldn't struggle to find that in a car park that's for sure.

Thanks Carl and you :-)

It'll be staying relatively standard but I do want to address some of the inherent weak points.

I'm nearly finished removing the nasty window tints.. what a s**t job!!!

Quick update on this as a few bits to report, firstly she broke down on me! Turned out to be the fuel pump, I was a little suspicious of this anyway as knew the previous owner had replaced it but was sure it wouldn't of been for a new one. So I ended up buying a new VDO unit from Euros and convinced by Peugeot main dealer to fit it for me.

To my surprise the car is now significantly smoother with an almost rock solid idle, on the move its most noticeable in the lower rev ranges, say creeping in 2nd at a 1,000rpm or so, the car now picks up very smoothly, it wasn't necessarily rough before, but perhaps a little hesitant/jolty. May be of use to know for anyone who's still on the original pump/no idea if it's been replaced etc, replacing it may be worthwhile as preventative maintenance whilst also gaining the benefits mentioned.

Unfortunately my fuel gauge still isn't working, the previous thought process was a dodgy sender or stuck float arm, but it seems unlikely that either my brand new sender has a problem or the arm has been stuck twice.. so now thinking a new instrument cluster may be the next thing to try.

Carl if your reading this do you remember whether you were getting the gauge to move off the fuel sender plug? If so it would seem unlikely that the dash is at fault and I'll be well and truly stumped!

I also managed to change the crappy number plates, I don't like GB plates and the front was ready to fall off and not level whereas the rear was fitted stupidly low and looked rubbish. New standard plain plates fitted and have made a fair difference!

In other news, whilst the cab was broken and I was a little naffed off with it, I decided to get another cheaper to run daily and give the cab a rest with the intention to repair it in my own time and probably sell in the summer. I bought a 2010 Smart Fortwo Turbo (100bhp 3 cyl turbo motor in a sub 800kg car with paddleshift is actually more fun than it has any right to be! plus £30 tax and good mpg), however on the second day of ownership it developed a significant coolant leak and has been with a specialist since! Cue over a week of having two cars neither of which worked and getting lifts everywhere, after a week of already doing this when the cab broke down! Having fun I was not.

Hence to get me back on the road the cab was fixed, and now if I end up backing the Smart it will secure the cabs future with me, at least for 2017! I've had enough of getting my fingers burnt with cars!
