Hi all

Had a great day on track on Monday until I ran wide onto a kerb...

The vibration not only tripped the fuel cut off switch (embarassing...) but also seems to have buggered something around the passenger side drive shaft/diff

Under any aggressive right hand turn/lock the gearstick (satchshift) violently waggles from side to side and it can be felt through the entire car. this is further magnified by having more weight (i.e. one other person in the car)

The shaft looked to be sitting out of the box slightly (maybe 3mm) so we unbolted the lower arm and tried to resit it but to no avail...

By the time i got home it was crunching/rumbling as i come to a halt - what do you think i've borked this time?!

Cheers

Have you checked all engine and gearbox mounts? Once I had very similar symptoms with my 1.6 TU5JP after slowly rolling off a kerb. It was two of three bolts of the top engine mount which broke resulting in a significantly lowered engine on one side. Big grin

I had this on my ph1 on its road trip to France. It was terrible! Under any throttle, the stick was going ballistic left to right. The exhaust was doing the same. It turned out to be a drive shaft...

Had to drive like it for 300miles to get home.

Def not a mount, we stripped them down and checked on the day

Given that the shaft won't go back into the diff fully I'm expecting it's something to do with the diff or inner cv...either is f'ing annoying 1 hour into a track day ffs

What do you mean the centre join? The bearing in the engine mount?

Was the inner cv joint on the long shaft that was f**ked. Had loads of them before. Worst one was on a D-turbo soon as you accelerated the whole car shook itself to pieces.

Morning chaps

Well im depressed, we've fitted a new driveshaft (which sits in the box perfectly) and i still have the horrid vibration/waggle under hard right hand cornering AND as i discovered yesterday, if a wheel spins up

I was wondering if it could be a gear box mount but its all bakerbm stuff and seems as rigid as ever, could the diff cause such symptoms?

We've just moved to the big house in the country, i'm flat broke and have a track day in March already booked Sad

Any ideas?

Cheers

So the kerb i hit was the outside of a right hander, so we've changed the left drive shaft (which we thought wasnt sitting in the diff right but appears it was in the end) - So its had a new inner and outer CV.

I cant imagine why it would have damaged the drivers side shaft?

What is the long shaft? (as in, within the gearbox?)

To put it in context it was a new kerb and it was so violent it tripped the bloody fuel cut off!

Wheel bearing/balancing, no I haven't but in reality its fine in a straight line at all speeds, and also turning left...

(basically its when all the load is on the front left, or when the wheel spins up) - it feels/sounds like a diff issue?

Realistically could it be anything else? (Would a mount cause such a reaction?)

I noticed earlier it makes a 'clacking' type noise as i come to a halt which is definitely proportional to wheel rotation

The long shaft being the drivers side shaft
If it was that violent as said could be the diff bearings
Long shaft universal joint, long shaft bearing that sits in the lower engine mount bracket
Wheel bearing or just a bent wheel

Could also be the ball joint or a wish bone bush
If you take of the wheel and rotate the bearing does it spin really easily ?? There should be a small resistance e.g shouldnt spinn away freely by its self

But all being said gearstick wobble is usually drivers side drive shaft inner universal joint in the centre boot
Or diff bearings

My white rallye has a wobble also but only at speed and only steering right

Is the clanking due to wheel rotation or engine movement ???

In my defence it was on track and chasing down a 220 turbo, not driving like a tool in town lol

Thanks gents, we shall investigate all of the above!
