Guys,

About at the point with the Rallye now where it needs to go off and have the front end blasted. Ive a couple more bits to take off but if you've seen my project thread you'll see ive finally managed to get all the god awful bitumen based waxoil type underseal off. The engine bay isn't bad but does have some signs of surface rust in the normal places. The idea is to do the same as the underside. Bare metal, zinc prime, seal seal, epoxy mastic then paint. That should sort things out nicely.

I've a couple of questions really about what blasting to have done, both in terms of media and method. Sand blasting can be a little harsh, soda blasting seems gentle but effective but not that many places do it, or then there's vapour blasting. What ever I choose will need to strip off the factory seam sealant/stone chip covering as it's evident it's failed in places and rusting from underneath.....

Ideally, I want to get it looking something like this, ready for paint...

So, thoughts and recommendations? Soda blasting seems to be the way to go for minimal damage but am concerned it won't remove what I need it to....has anyone else had their bay blasted and if so, what/how/by who etc?

Cheers

Id look into different shot blast media the differences in glass bead and other material is sll important with regards to harshness and finish also consider you psi whilst blasting

Personally id strip it with a quality stripper hot jet wash it and wire brush on the end of a drill
Then consider what to shot blast and how

Problem with the front end is access with a wire brush.

Too many corners, nooks, crannies etc that a wire brush just won't get into....

Very true
i prefer to brush first in most cases and then blast if and where required less expensive and less messy and the dust never comes out completely

Can you still get stuff dipped? I remember there being issues grit working it's why into seems that led to rusting issues further down the road

I could possibly look at dipping although I've heard of the dip fluid remaining in parts of the shell and causing issues with paint.

Pug heaven, did you have the whole shell blasted or just the engine bay etc?
