ive been having a mare with my atb diff
turns out it was fuggered, iv rebuilt it now to refit

ive stripped a second box for some diff crown-wheel bolts and found this box has a shim on the floating diff bearing speedo end...

how do you set the preload on the diff bearings?

does my ATB need pre load shims and how to set them up?

any help would be grand
thanks

Been many years since I did anything like this but reckon 0.015" preload will see you alright.

Build it up but leave off one of the end plates that hold the drive shaft oil seals. With the outerbearing race in place seat it securely and measure the depth to the race from the 'gasket' face.

Measure the depth of the end plate and calculate the amount of shim needed to give the required preloadf.

Oh should have asked, are you using new bearings?

Preload is essential on new bearings to take up the wear as they bed in.

But if re-using old bearings do not change the pre-load as it will wear the old bearings out.

oddly the preload shim was only a very early be1 thing, and only re-appeared in the 6 speed box and i think only one thickness.

I seem to remember someone recently tried to order a shim of a certain thickness and was told they come as a pack of various thicknesses?

My phase 1 gti6 1997 had a shim. simply bolt the diff housing down and then fit and torque the speedo drive up.

Just put back what you took out mate mine is a very early phase 2 and had no shim at all. Replaced the bearings for new SNR ones and refitted with the ATB diff. The speedo housing does the preload just bolted it up and mines been fine with 260bhp for 2 1/2 years.

unsure!

what is the difference in the shim and not to shim?

is it the casing machining or is it the earlier diffs a different width

will take some callipers home tonight to measure the two diffs i have and the gearbox

Yeah, they come in a pack of various thicknesses. I never thought they were anything to do with preload though, thought they were just to take up any excess movement of the diff once the bearings were pressed on. Either way I have always used them to ensure the diff is a nice snug fit in its housing and never had any issues.

to add to this
Ive been to hell and back with this

i was asking because once fitted my ATB would pull to the right on power then kick to the left on engine braking

what i have found..........

My second hand ATB was f**ked! I've rebuilt it on advise from Quaife
refitted the diff now pulled the opposite direction.......

started looking into pre-loads on the bearings

removed the long shaft and speedo nose to find the nose was 9.6mm NOT 10mm

refitted 8.65mm speedo housing with the 1.5mm shimm

test drove car is spot on no pull

conclusion.....
the supposed 10mm speedo housing may have been eroded by a spun bearing in the past, giving me excessive float on the diff

Quite possibly. Mine pulls about both ways depending on which wheel it sends the power too which I've always assumed is normal? And never pulls when you let off.

Sometimes tries to rip the steering wheel out your hand though if you put your foot down at the wrong time pulling out of a junction lol
