Sorry to resurect the thread.. I've just had a Powerflow custom system put on my 6, 2.25" diameter pipe with a decat pipe, centre box and back box and feel like the cars lost low down and midrange torque but I also feel like the noise is very raspy between 2.5 and 5k, is the noise normal? And what do people recommend: Sports cats or a normal cat? Any advice/help is welcomed and much appreciated. Thanks!

What you have lost in torque, you will have gained in bhp. So it depends on what you want...

What about sport cat with higher flow than standard but meeting Euro 2 emission limit?

The genuine, standard catalytic convertor is actually really good. There are plenty of not so great aftermarket replacements though.

If it was reaction to my question, I'm thinking about variant OEM cat with quite high price compare to aftermarket or some good sport cat with simmilar price like OEM but with better airflow, like on rallye cars which have to meet some level of Euro spec.

I'm not sure if i can meet Euro 2 with De-cat and I might use more higher torque with sport cat than with de-cat.

Lots of chat at the moment about cars failing mots due to missing cats and more roadside inspections to catch out drivers without them.
Guessing this is only going to get worse and worse but hard to police with limited resources.

The validity of insurance after an accident when a cat is missing is still a very valid point though.

I was involved in an accident with a neighbor and their insurance company assessed my cars damage as the had to pay. They didn't even notice the GTI body kit, lowered suspension or rude boy exhaust so I'd be surprised if they would notice a decat.

they can and do check, whether it bothers them is another matter, I saw a year old tesla at a recovery yard last week with a wheel missing, much of the offside front wing both airbags deployed.

had bald rear tyres so they're not paying out.

The good old "they'll never notice" chestnut. You are taking a massive risk in fact. If they do check, and do find out, then you are uninsured. If you shunted a Lamborghini in the rear and had to pay for a new rear bumper, matching the pearl effect paint, having the paint half the car to get it to blend in etc out of your own pocket, the sums could be eye-watering. Perhaps you could finance it by selling your sister/house/share portfolio or whatever, but you'll wish you never had the stupid decat.

Insurers always look for ways not to pay out. Why hand them one on a plate?

Certainly not "you'll never notice". More like "changing my bumpers won't change the way I drive so why would it affect my insurance". Young and naive I guess. If you look hard enough, I'm sure you could find a hell of a lot of cars that 'technically' have no insurance.

Kind of what I thought peeps thanks.
As I'm nearing 50, the thought of gaining a few bhp and a bit of noise over having my car properly insured is not even worth thinking about Smile

Never in a million year will a copper pull you over and go "yeah can I have a look to see if your cat is missing please" to say otherwise is scare mongering.

I've been pulled plenty of times. Never had a problem. Even if they did see it, they would prob just give a rectification notice.

It depends a lot on where you live. A friend of mine got pulled a few weeks ago and got the whole treatment. Police went over his car and actually called out DVSA. Police checked that every one of his mods to his EVO was on his insurance and DVSA did a roadside emmissions test.

All was good apart from his missing cat which was a fixed penalty and re-test at an MOT station. It can happen but the likely hood is low unless you join a motorway going twice as fast as the police car you pull in front of lol

Scaremongering my ***e.

For those of you whose frontal cortex is not yet fully developed, it is an insurance assessor post-accident you have a lot more to fear than a bored copper who doesn't like your chavvy Lexus-style rear lights as you blow past him at 90.

The insurance assessor inspecting your car for road-worthiness post-accident probably will not bother to check. But if he does you have given the insurance company an excuse to invalidate your insurance cover on the grounds the car failed one or more criteria for a MOT. If that happens to you (and I'll concede it is unlikely but in turn you cannot deny it is possible), then good luck with that.

True. Still the likeliness is soo slim. I had a post accident assessor (from the other guys insurance as they were paying out) inspect my car for damage after an accident. It had different bumpers, spot lights, lowered, sport exhaust plus loads more. He didn't question any of it. He actually commented as to how nice the car was LOL

Also, just for the record, you must be aware that an MOT is only to show the vehicle is up to standard at the time of the test, no more. I see cars daily that have mot failures. I can't think that insurers won't pay out if someone has a headlight beam out of line or ball joint gone....

maybe not an item as you mention, but say a bald tyre or similar, they certainly will baulk at that.
