Hi Gents,

Interested in peoples perspectives on my dilemma....

To re-shell or fix it?

Quite simply my car looks great from the outside (well good enough for a track car) however at 162k the bottom end is getting quite noisy, clutch and cambelt need doing too....on top of this, sadly mine is pretty rusty (front edges of the chassis rails, small hole in the one rail running across the back of the front arch and both front jacking points flattened...)

Oh and to top it all off, when i had the AD08's fitted the tyre bloke took my advice to avoid the jacking point.....and used the f'ing floor pan and split it from the bulk head under the accelerator pedal Thumbs down

Now its got loads of nice bits on it - all brand new.....B8's, Satchshift, RichW Wishbones, BakerBM Mounts, Oil cooler, Hi-Spec Billet 400's etc etc

I'm massively attached to it.....so what would you do?

1) Strip it, source a better standard Rallye and fit all the bits again
2) Try and just buy a shell and re-shell it
3) Sell it as a project and start again?

(Options 1 & 2 are a right pain as i have 2 kids, no time, and cant spend thousands getting holes cut etc etc for the Satchshift etc)

Appreciate your thoughts Smile

Good man, i like that option too - what do people think I should budget for welding?

The main issue being jacking points, could i get some kind of box section or something put there instead that a trolley jack sits on?

Oh make no mistake i'm the same, i bloody love this car and I want to fix it - the reality is i paid £1100 for it 2 years ago, prob spent £3k on it since and can easily see another £2-3k to get it 'right'

Then i see Roland sell his S/C car for £2.5k - starts to test my sentimental logic

I would take it to someone who has got love for the 306 and get a price from them. You will get a good job done at a good price. It wont be cheap, but it will be easy, and you will keep the car. Maybe strengthen and paint the front end while you are there.

If you love it that much fix it.

Only sold mine cheap as I needed a change from 306's after 10 years in and out of them and didn't pay a great deal when I bought it.

Damien is right and if I'm totally honest I'm bored of the Megane already and if it wasn't the fact I Love Liquid Yellow paint and the Recaros I'd be considering in selling it!

When your a petrol head the spending never stops on cars so just suck it up,fix it and enjoy Thumbs up

Very true... but then there's what makes sense and what you do lol I've had my 6 since I was 21 so 8 years now. I won't ever sell it unless it gets written off even if I have to garage it for a few years or something I'll be keeping it. The split floor should be easy if you sort it asap before much water gets in there.

Floors on these are made of paper thin steel can bash it back down and weld it up then underseal it. Anything can be fixed if you want it fixed....

get some pictures up of the corrosion/damage.

with a 306 a reshell need not be into another 6/rallye, there's nothinh stopping you fitting all the parts into a nice clean 1.4 if you really wanted, unless its really fooked though, or you find a caged shell worth getting, I'd fix it.

Demondriverdan has a nice caged rallye shell for sale. I'd put it all into that and sack off the rusty one.

Passenger sill (inside) - i put some anti rust stuff on it the other day to slow it down the other week

Where they split the floor:

But its so nice from the outside Sad

Repair it it just needs love to be fair it is worse than mine was but under the crust theres still plenty of steel

If it was mine id fix it but would depend on you realistic budget
Will need some proper restructuring welding judging from the pics

But a white rallye rare and hard to find now unless your ryan who has them all lol

Also think how easy will it be to find a clean shell which would cost more to set or repair and once you have repaired you know its good for many years to come

P.s. if you break it ill take the bonnet skirts bumpers and tailgate Smile

FIX IT

No one seems that keen on mine so probably just going to keep it and make it track-able!

Hey Dan,

I am keen to a degree, the hole in the bulkhead makes me nervous though, if its rotten there, i'm worried what other gremlins are hidden....also the cage isnt the sexiest (daft i know but i'd want to run harness bars etc) and i'm running on a shoe string...

PM me if you think its worth having a better chat about it Smile

I'm planning on using it to learn to weld like dealing with that hole and learning to spray panels by repainting it all. You can always get more bars welded in to the cage, it's about £100 to get a harness bar welded in to the X at the rear or the same to get a full harness bar welded in the rear.

It'll be nice when it's all fixed up Smile

Cool, i wish i had the space to do that myself but that is sadly not the case...you should do a project thread!

Should that not have failed the last MOT with the corrosion holes in the bottom of the inner arches due to the proximity to the subframe mounting?

It had an advisory for the end of the chassis rail but the hole in the picture only appeared when I poked it earlier Sad
