Guys,

Does anyone know exactly how the compensator should work? (I know what it does, my questions are around the mechanical workings...)

So inside the compensator, there are two what I can only describe as studs with springs round them. There is a bar (which I've removed in this pic) that sits across the top.of the two springs and has a dimple for the stud on the level arm bit.

My question being, should the actual stud move in and out to adjust the braking pressure or is it only the pressure on the springs from the lever arm that do the adjusting?

Managed to massively derust and free off this compensator but not sure if the studs are stuck or should be like that....

There is a big circlip inside I'm going to try and take out which may facilitate the removal of these studs...just wondered if anyone had been here before....

I always assumed that the worked as a pressure drop chamber of sorts. You'd brake the pressure would go through the back of it and would push those studs forward until the load lever (the one on the flap) pushed against it and then it would divert it to the brakes.

But I have no idea, that's just my guess. Probably just gets the pressure in and goes '(French laugh) hur hur hur, baguette' and then the rear brakes are compensated.

Thanks Puggit....

Well I got the circlip out and then there is another small metal.ring which came out easliy enough. The studs ain't moving at all though. Got a pair of long nose pliers on them as I think they and the sleeves they are in should remove. The ring and the circlip are there clearly to keep them in place....

I'm guessing it's like everything else off this rear beam....seized solid. Challenge is getting it apart!

Well I've got one that I could pull apart to see if mine move. Hopefully being a NZ car won't be rusted and seized like yours. So consider this a bump to find this once I have a look
