Having some issues with my catalytic converter- fairly recently every time I drive through some surface water or in heavy rain (avoiding big puddles obviously) I've noticed a knocking sound like something has disturbed it and it's catching against the underside. When I kill the engine and start it up again it goes away. I know water isn't good for it in general, but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced the same thing?

I owned a GLX 306 a few years back and that had a guard over the cat- does the same thing exist for the GTi 6? Just done a quick search online and can't seem to find anything.

To answer part of your question - there is a heat shield above the cat.
