being an owner of both a gti6 and an xsi......

and apart from a few engine mods making the extra 30bhp or so.....

i cant see the point of the xsi....(when the 306 was still new)

marketed as a sporty version, what was its appeal over the gti- 6 (purely price?)

i just cant see anyone going into a show room thinking "yeah i want the fast one".....then seeing the two cars and going
"you know what i want the one thats second best"

they both appear to be the same price to tax and insure, annoyingly.

is there somethign the xsi has over the gti6?

I assume from new the price difference was significant enough to warrant the decision. Also xsi available in 5 door, offers marginally better fuel economy and, if young, much cheaper to insure.

Remember the environment these cars were originally marketed. Sky high insurance premiums because of the 90s joyriding epidemic, £2k in list price (guessing here) might seem marginal now but when a "good" salary was £15-20k that is quite significant.

Insurance was hugely different. GTi was higher than the Rallye too back in the day.
XSi would have been launched first too so a double take at the marketing bulls**t

I love my XSi

The point of the XSi was to make money. That's always the point.

i bought an xsi becuase it was 300 quid with a non working rev counter.

i fixed the rev counter after having it on my drive for less than an hour (snapped wire)

ok i kinda get it now...... more to insure back in the day....

my misunderstadning was becuase when i swapped my insurance over form my xsi to my gti6 and back again a few years ago.
there was no difference in price....just a 20 pound car swap fee.

and seeing as mine is the 2.0l 16v..... my tax is the same also.

anyone want to part ex a gti6 for my phase 3 xsi ? Big grin

I would have thought that the XSi would have been the next model up from the XT, so to tempt customers to spend a little bit more money for a much better spec car. Maybe the GTi6 was a big step up from the XSi and XT. I still have the old brochure for the 306 phase 1's and the XSi was top of the range.

The spec of the XSi was low, a XT had much better kit as std bar no sports front seats
