where is the 12v feed for the engine loom coming from the alternator like on the std 6 loom?
check the connection on the alternator and the wire link back to the battery via the starter + tag

Good Luck Ash ....I had 4 days of hell with dash Electrical problems ....found out what it was by accident as I nearly gave up m8 ...
You may of seen it was my Main fuse box inside the car corroded inside & it appears now that having welding done on my car made finished it off Crazy
Like yours it was working one day after the welding & then nothing for no reason ...was no reason at the time for it ?

Keep us updated Ash Thumbs up

I do remember the previous owner unable to start the car after fitting the new engine then saying he had done the alternator connections wrong.... Maybe he didn't sort it properly and it's now cocked something up. However the car should still run without the alternator connected just won't charge.
And if the wire wasn't connected or excessively corroded at the battery end then the starter wouldn't turn the engine over.

nope, if alternator is not connected the double relay gets no power.

without the ring tab on the alternator + to the battery the car will just turn over and nothing will fire on the engine loom,
but you may see a back feed from other circuits from off the car loom into the engine loom giving you a low voltage of 9v

Care to explain? As the loom only goes from there to the battery. Would still be battery voltage feed to the relay which should be enough to make a spark.... but what cully is describing sounds just like the problem they are having....

Mind you depends which ring terminal you are talking about as there's 2 that come off the 13mm and one on the 8mm IIRC. I was just meaning the main start charge loom but presumably you guys are talking about one of the other 2?

you have 3 wires on the alternator

1, alternator big fat + connected to large 8mm ring > starter 8mm ring > Battery Positive
2, alternator smaller cable maybe White connected to large 8mm ring.......this is the engine loom feed cable
3, alternator small cable smaller m4-5 ring this is the dash light feed to the alternator connected on its own to the smaller stud on the alternator

1-2, are connected together
3, is on its own stud

Previous owner bodges coming to light yet again!!. We noticed a while ago that the locating clips on the harness connector block were broken going onto the ecu.

we were working on the car saturday doing other bits and tried to start it on the off chance, it fired up on three cylinders, so we were poking bits, wiggling things etc and pete put some pressure on the ecu connection and we had firing on all four cylinders... Not sure the long term fix as the connection is part of the main harness..

ah! easy fix tbh, buy or source a new/replacement connector and swap the pins over

the 55 pin 3 row bosch plug is very very common.

Knew it would be a dodgy connection somewhere glad you got to the bottom of it. People tinkering themselves or "having a go" often leads to more harm than good....
