I have a problem with my GTI 6 in which I have 500ml of oil coming up through the rocker to intake breather pipe within 50 miles of driving. I had this problem 12 months ago this carried on for a while and then suddenly stopped about March.

Since then I have had no problems at all, no loss of oil - nothing. Then last month I noticed oil in my air filter, took it out and it was saturated with cleanish - brown oil, within a week or so the same again. I have since rerouted the breather pipe into a 500ml plastic bottle which is filling up within only a few miles of driving, last night being 500ml in 13 miles.

History of the engine is little, however I bought the vehicle with a broken cambelt and reconditioned the head in my spare time at work, I replaced all valve guides, valves, stem seals, good quality head gasket and the car ran spot on for a couple of months before the first incident.

I posted a thread on here last year when it first happened, back then it was pushing oil into the intake, i put the pipe into a bottle then to keep it from going through. I compression tested it and the I cant remember the exact figures but 1 + 2 were extremely high and 3 + 4 were good, I did the test on my other gti 6 to see, and they all matched the results on cylinders 3 + 4. I cleaned out the breathers and booked the car in for a leakdown and they told me there was nothing out of the ordinary showing

After a few months it stopped completely so I put the breathers back and have not had any oil loss over the last 9 months until a few weeks back, and the problem has returned

I have questioned it being the rings or bores but what has puzzled me is the 9 months of faultless driving in between.

If i could get any other ideas on the problem that would be great

Cheers
Dan

Is the breather system free from blockages? If it's restricted it will cause excess pressure in the crankcase.

breather system pipes. valve thing on the rocker pipe, rocker cover outlet themselfes,
the port into the block check they are all clear, take off the cam cover as the vents internal are enclosed in the cover,

how many miles on the engine bottom end?

maybe time for a piston ring rebuild

I've checked most of the breathing system, took the manifold off and cleaned all the pipes out as far as where they enter back in the block and I fed some rod down in from there, there wasn't a hellish amount in them but a little.

How does the regulator on the intake breather work? When it happened the 1st time i swapped one off my old 6 but I'm not 100% sure that was a good one (i just didn't have problems on that one). Also inside the cam cover are these a baffle/gauze type thing inside?

The engine has done 120k, I'm putting some cash aside for worst case scenario, just don't want a rebuild and maybe have the same issue after.

As said, it sounds like the breather system is blocked somewhere.

Inside the intake cam cover there is a compartment which the lid can be removed by undoing the torx screws and then you can inspect it.

As for the circular filter inline with the pipe, I personally would remove this and just run an uninterrupted pipe in place of it.

Either you have some serious crankcase compression or a blockage as others have said. I'd remove most of the breather pipes and check their not blocked full of sludge. And as Stan said inspect the chamber in the front rocker cover if you don't find anything in the other pipes.

Cheers guys, the problem seems to have stopped. I took all the breathing system apart and cleaned all the pipes, took the cam cover off and washed the chamber, and ran the air line through the block. I left the regulator off the pipe, and have still had that pipe running into a bottle to keep check. All I've had over the last couple of weeks is a little oily condensation drop down, nothing that I'd be worried about.

Cheers again guys

Bringing up the same problem again unfortunately... I'm baffled by this, it seems to be blocked breathers causing my problem. They block up after about 250 miles, pop the pipes off blow down them with the airline, reset the clock and it's good to go for roughly another 250. I've repeated this 5 times now and it seems to be the same, Except this week where its been colder I managed 200 miles since the last clean out. (This is without the valve on the breather and just a pipe straight to a bottle

Done another leak down test and compression test and still shows nothing unusual. Changed the oil and filter after running some flush through it. Not losing any water either. What can cause the breathers to block so quickly and regularly? I don't tend to drive anywhere less than 20 miles, and usually I'm giving it some.

After driving home tonight - roughly 20 miles, I popped the bonnet, quite a bit of condensation/water was in the bottom of the bottle. popped the cap off the coolant, no pressure and the water in there was stone cold. All pipes the pipes i could reach to and from the thermostat were warm along with my heater.

Anyone have any ideas as I haven't a clue still

Cheers
