Anyone got some advice on how to get the strut back into the hub, safely and without braking anything.

Everything is on except the struts, current plan is to line them up and lower the car. So the struts drop into the holes.

Both sides.

Compress the springs with tool ! You will need to position the compressors so that they will fit in compressed mine between the secound coil down and the strutt spring lip (bit that the spring sits on )Fit into place at top of arch and bolt in but not tight , the issue you will have is space at the top to fit in the compressors had to clamp mine with the bolt head at the top
got a trolley jack and a strong piece of wood jacked up the strutt and tightened the compressors by hand from the bottom be sure if using this method to keep the wood flush with the strutt use s tiny piece of wood at the base between the strutt and the wood to give clearence to allow the strut base to go into the hub top slowly !!!! Watch fot twist and realign if required
Once in position slowly lower the jack and allow to seat in the hub hole
Then put the jack under the ball joint use a piece of wood inbetween to avoid damage jack up slowly to allow the strut to slide in
Make sure you lubricate the hub top to allow ease of insertion
And remeber to open the hub top properly it will have closed slightly since the last strutt removal
Then continue to jack slowly
Where you have removed the track rod end tap on the steel of the hub with a hammer or mallett to wiggle it in dont go mad the key is wiggle and time slowly catchy monkey and all that
Did mine on the drive at home
!make sure when putting in you align for the strutt positioning locator at the back of the strutt lines up with the hub slot it will be a b**ch if you dont allow for this Smile

place an allen key into the hub clamp split and twist this should open the clamp up enough to slide the strut in without a fight once you have the strut short enough to line up

Don't need to compress springs particularly on lowered cars. Clean up the hub and the Base of the shock and put plenty of copper grease on them both. The Allen key holding the hub apart works a treat but isn't always necessary. What usually gets them jammed up half way is the hub and shock being at slightly different angles.

Once you've got it started going in if it's to tight to slide up with your hands then put a trolly Jack under the lower ball joint. May still stick if not at the correct angle in which case a tap on the side of the hub with a copper mallet or similar will usually make it shoot in nicely.

I've always found them to be the same tbh. Standard shocks and springs it's a bit of a struggle to get the hub low enough to get under the bottom of the shock but it is doable if you pull the hub outward far enough with the driveshaft nut undone.

Both sides should be the same really. Possible the P bush on the offside is more warn so let the arm come down a bit lower on that side.
