Hello,
I have just renewed the complete suspension of my dturbo hdi as this is my every day car, the gti for fun. I fitted peugeot shocks 5208 N2 and 5208 N3 to the front N/S and O/S respectively. I noticed the following after picking up from dealer. I am assuming the units are a twin tube design and low pressure gas charged. N3 had label attached 'gas pressure,do not open', sherlock has nothing on me!! N3 behaved normally when the rod was compressed in by hand it self extended slowly as expected. Not so with N2 even after numerous cycles by hand the rod would not self extend or to be precise would only extend approx 1 cm. Both shocks offer equal resistance when compressed and also rebound being pulled out by hand. I also noticed that N2's rod would infact fall in a little albeit slowly after drawing back out. I took the unit back to the dealer and got a replacement which acted in exactly the same way. The dealer assured me all was good and I fitted the units to the car. Over the past week or so,since fitment, something does not feel quite right with the N/S unit-it seems to emit a slight high frequency vibration and feels a little 'crashy' compared to the O/S. The car does track true but vibration is starting to annoy me. Can someone tell me if this is my own unique way of going mad or is something not quite right with the N/s unit. Are these part no.s actually gas charged and what is going on with the difference in behaviour of the two units. All other parts including top mount bearings, wishbones, droplinks and inner and outer tie rods are all new. Front tyres are new and wheels are balanced. Any knowledge here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Pass on part numbers and genuine shocks to be honest it's rare I got shocks from a dealer more often go for brands such as Sachs or Bilstein and buy a pair then their matched an made by OE suppliers.

If one is gas and oil and one is only oil filled then they are probably sourced from different suppliers? Pug for make the parts they authorise someone to make them for them and they sometimes change suppliers e.g pug oil filters used to always be made by purflux but have changed to Mahule recent years.

Never known a shock to produce a high pitched noise though?
What ever happens they should be a matched pair.

Also worth doing the tracking after replacing them. Have found on recent months that 3 different types of shocks or coilovers have all affected the total toe in / out by around 4 degrees whih would make it handle funny.

Peugeot made their own dampers, you may find a difference in them initially if one was stored upright and one on its side.

Yes,in relation to the storage, peugeot did point this out to me. It seems to be true what Armzs16 says here. the new peugeot 306 gti rear shocks seem to me to be Monroe monotubes albeit bagged in peugeot bags. They are made in CZ where I believe Tenneco who own Monroe have a production facility. They look completely different to the Original shocks and fully extended are slightly longer than the originals. No doubt they are a generic high pressure monotube. I should add at this point that today i changed the droplinks from Meyle hd to Febi plastic ones and this has gone a good way in curing the vibration and crashy feel from the front. The meyle are for sure a nice quality but perhaps better suited to a car with a stiff set up in general. Thank you very much for the feedback

Originally maybe but nearly 20 years on they will have used a different supplier or severel different ones as the car is no longer current.
