Thinking of buying a new car it's got MOT I can arrange insurance cover on it but what do I do about the tax. I'd like to drive it back rather than trailer it ?

Any help appreciated Thumbs up

If it has the MOT and you've got insurance then buy the car and find the nearest post office to where you are buying and go and purchase the tax there. Then drive it home. Thumbs up

The log book still has to be filled out and sent off ect, there should be a reference number I think on the buyers slip that you get asked for when you tax it online.

I do wounder about these new tax rules. Let's say you go and buy a car that is taxed mot'ed ect as the owner has been driving it. You buy the car and the owner has to send the log book off to the dvla to register the new keeper ect. This process can take up to 5 days before the dvla know that the vehicle has changed owner which technically means it's still taxed until the dvla recieve the log book.

Not sure if that makes sense or not but I can't figure it out....Wink

I brought mine in jan this year drove it home then taxed it you will get to the end of the tax month to pay they will back date it for you when you begin your tax payments if in the highly unlikely chance that you get pulled tell the police you just brought it you will need the green section to tax it show to them this if you do get stopped
Cameras that look for no tax dont issue till the end of each month for this reason don't 😆panic enjoy your new motor just pay before the month end 😉

Only problem with that is you arent insured if you have a bump and it's not taxed are you? I'm no expert but surely the claims company would run a check on when you purchased the car and be able to work out that you hadn't taxed it in your name? For the sake of 20 quid on a wasted months tax you might as well just bite the bullet, IMO anyway Smile

You are insured if you have paid your insurance the insurance company are still obligated to pay on your policy the not having road tax offence is civil not criminal not having mot WILL invalidate any insurance as you cannot prove your vehicle fit for use however if it is stated within your policy that they wont or that will only pay at a reduced without tax then that's what you get this is a terms and policy situation
I do agree however you should always tax mot and insure your car at all times at certain times when there is an issue where you cannot pay tax straight away e.g taking to mot or first purchase make sure you pay before months end, in my opinion people who dont pay tax and insurance should find ill favour from all that pay Smile

Actually legally the lack of MOT, whilst unlawful, isn't unlawful to the extent it can invalidate insurance. So if u have insurance and tax and have just forgotten to get your test done (easily done as I have before as there's no reminder is there!) you'll simply get a fine for being out of test. Not a fine for having no insurance etc. this is a fact because *cough* a friend *cough* got caught 2 days out of test and it was a fine, either £30 or £60 I can't remember.
