Hi All,

Got the Rallye in at the garage today for it's test. And all they keep bleeting about is that the wheel is catching the gearbox on right lock.

I explained to them that these don't full lock right because of the 6th gear (I reminded them that they've passed my two previous 6s) but they're insistent this is a fail.

Now the only differences between the Rallye and my previous 6s is it's dropped 60-70mm instead of 30mm, it's got a Xsara Steering Rack and it's got my 15" steel wheels on... would these mods make the difference? Anyone know of a cure to get it through test? (I've tried putting the cyclones back on but it's still catching...)

Not a clue buddy. I'm not even sure what a steering ram is :- it's the 2.4 if that helps?

I'm not totally sure but I think when fitting a VTS rack to a 306 with a 6 speed box you need to fit the gti6 steering ram as this limits the lock and stops the wheel from catching the box.

Already got 10mm spacers on and it's still catching!!

Yes it's the ram that limits the right hand lock so swap that back on. The pipes can be a c**t to get undone sometimes though.

I had a 6 ten years ago that would touch the box.

Would be surprised if the ram had been changed at that period in it's life, so would anything else trivial cause the issue?

Track rod ends adjusted unevenly, wheels set straight ahead with the rack not in the centre.

Except for my Mk2 2.6 Xsara rack and OE dampers I've done the same and no issues with MOTs. Before doing it I read threads on here saying use the original GTI6/Rallye ram and it worked for me.

So is it likely mine has a
Xsars rack then as I noticed only the other day it has polished one of the bolts on the end of the box! The car has quite a history of bits (RichW bits etc) or could it be mine is buggered?

Could be someone fitted wrong ram to the stock rack as I've heard people insist that any ram will do. I've also had someone at a Peugeot dealer say to me "mate there is something wrong with your steering - it has less lock when turning right". So an incorrect ram on your stock rack is more than possible.

Quickest way to see if you have VTS rack is twirl the steering wheel lock to lock and count the turns; 2.5-ish = VTS rack; 3.6-ish = std.
