Ive got a set of c5s that need painting and was wondering if i need to do anything to the surface before i apply primer? Do i need to ruff the surface up a little to give the primer something to key to? Ive cleaned them with gunk and then brake cleanered to ensure they have no dirt and grime on them and there isnt any surface rust present

Yes rub them down all over with about 800 wet and dry. If the surface is too smooth then paint will just flake off.
