Right just to clear things up as my head bit confused about it. , I've heard some come with shims some didn't?

Mine didn't have shims fitted

Been told pre-load on the diff bearings is done by the speedo housing. I've done up the speedo housing to what I thought the torque should be

But is there a special way to do this?

Colin at pug performance He said all the boxes he has done there has never been a shim. He said just make sure the diff turns when its all together and that there is no end float and if theres non then you are all good??

Just about only job I've never done yet but my diff will be here this week. If there wasn't a shim it can't have needed one so wouldn't worry personally. As long as you put it back how it came apart I can't see there being an issue.

No shim needed in either of mine, conical bearing surface so the speedo housing does the tension

Exactly. Effectively like doing up a taper wheel bearing.

Had a look on autodata and it doesn't specify a torque for the speedo housing anywhere.... Even went into repair times for speedo housing and it have time but no special instructions. Las one I replaced I just nipped hand tight to a sensible amount and never had a comeback at all.
