Hi guys I'm just after some advice if possible. I've got a gearbox that im fitting to my 6 and i thought I would clean it up and paint it before I fitted it. So I was looking over it today and I noticed that the seals on the diff for the driveshafts, well there looks like there is only one? On the first pic you can see the seal no problem at all. However on the 2nd pic there seems to be just a metal bearing housing as it appears but it's flush with the end of the causing? Is there ment to be a seal on the other end as service box does lists two seals with two part numbers so the 2nd seal may be a completely different looking item? Does the 2nd seal sit inside the metal housing? Any help at all is appreciated as always

you're not just missing the seal, you're missing the whole speedo drive housing which holds the bearings in as well!!!

if its a 6 speed box you may well be missing a shim too.

On the 2nd pic where I'm assuming the speedo housing goes, there is no shim stuck to the bearing, so I take it the shm sits between the bearing and the speedo housing yes? And it's the speedo housing that holds the other seal?

So of we look pic number 2 then will the shim sit on top of the bearing race? Ie the part with the numbers stamped onto it? Or is it the next circle out ie the actual casing itself?

Unless diff housing has been opened the shim can't come out ? It sits next the roller bearings on the diff it's self ? Open up the diff housing and check there is a shim for each bearing on the diff - I learnt the hard way what happens if they are missing

The housing has been opened at some point so I will open it up again and make sure they are there then. Are they just a certain thickness? Meaning as long as there are two shims in there it should be ok?

Service box does only show one shim (if I'm looking at the correct picture ofcourse)

Yes mate the part with the numbers stamped on it in my 2nd pic is the bearing race (or cup if you like). It's what the roller needles run around on

I've got some spare from when I rebuilt a box but used an LSD that already had some fairly recent ones fitted if you're after some.

Just priced 2 seals from the stealers and a set of engine mounts and the seals are over 30 quid! Ebay is calling my name i think

Check your local motorfactors, mine does febi driveshaft seals at about £7 a pair.
