Guys,

Had a look in the FAQ section but couldn't find anything..

At some point soon, the rear beam is going to need to come off. Reasons for this are two fold.

Firstly, I need access to the chassis so I can clean it up and paint it. Secondly, I want to clean up the beam and detail it like the beams that Andy (used to?) knock out.

From what I can see, and have read, it looks relatively simple. 3 bolts per side in the boot floor to be undone, brake lines to be undone and handbrake cables to be disconnected from the caliper. Clearly brake lines and handbrake cables first, then the 3 bolts in the boot floor either side and in theory it should drop out?

Is there anything special to know about disconnecting the handbrake cables and if the brake pipes are disconnected at the unions, is there anything I need to do with regard to blocking them off to stop leaks etc?

Sorry for the questions guys!

Abs sensors need disconnecting, put a Polly bag over the tank and do the lid up on top to act as a suction to reduce the brake fluid flow.

If you don't intend on renewing all the fluid and if you have some spare unions make a 2" New line up then crush the pipe and bend it back on its self to act as a blank

Might as well fit new cables as they don't cost a lot

Thanks bud, appreciate that.

I think I will add cables to the parts list. Might as well whilst I'm.in there as you say. Just not sure if I might be better off buying another beam I can strip down and rebuild and then do pretty much a straight swap....

Just been reading this link...

http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=288941

Whilst is a bit cowboy in places (read removing the old bearing with a screwdriver and gouging the housing....) It gives me a good idea of what I'll be needing to do, I think. I'd love to buy a beam completely done from Andy but don't have that kinda money spare right now....

That is the hardest part of the whole process. This time I used a bearing puller with the outward facing grips and made some ledge to pull against.

Ah, ok.

The pic of the beam you've posted above looks awesome. That's exactly what I want to do with mine.

spare wheel and cage need removing

backbox and heat shield need removing

centre section needs dropping off hanger

from experience, cars which have the brake compensator, have easier to undo brakelines.

later (newer) cars can be a right PITA to undo (but i have a knack to them Wink)

powdercoating will give the most protective finish

wet painting can give nice finish, but won't take long to get stonechips
