Im getting a strange humming sound that increase with speed. I suspect its a driveshaft but the only symptom i have is noise.
I noticed a clicky sound when driving slowly a few weeks ago that seemed to match speed while i had my window down but i havent heard that for a while. Thought i should mention that.

Anyway this humming sound is only audible in 1st and 2nd at low speed and eventually wind noise and the exhaust drown it out..

My gut is saying its passenger side at the front.

May be a wheel bearing if it's just humming mate. Easiest way to check for a rough bearing is to jack the wheel up and spin it with one hand and place your other hand on the coil spring above. If there is a strong vibration felt in the spring then the bearing is on its way out. If there is hardly any or no vibration bearing is good

Good chance of it been a wheel bearing, chances are if a driveshafts that bad it's humming you would probably feel vibrations and shaking through the steering wheel
Then again i bought a s**t gearbox and that hummed and whined its arse off

I'd say input shaft if it goes with the clutch pressed as the release bearing spins all the time.

Well, took it to the local garage in wales and they basically said its something internal in the gearbox and as theres a gearbox specialist down the road I might as well give them a ring as they will likely be a bit cheaper
Sadly they are closed until the new year

****

Offers on a 6 as is any one ? Razz

Current plan is to drive back to london with the music on 40 so I can pretend its not there.

Good old RAC

I drove mine around for 3000 miles with that noise, it only went as it blew 3rd gear probably due to the power

Is it engine speed or road speed related? From your description it sounds road speed related so that means output side of the gearbox, so either pinion shaft or diff bearings. Diff bearings are a relatively easy DIY change, if pinion shaft then basically new or rebuilt box.

Should have added, to be heard at such a low speed my money is on pinion shaft. Diff is hardly turning in first gear so unless the bearings are absolutely FUBAR they would be like a worn wheel bearing and show up at medium speed, The pinion shaft will be running approx 4 times faster, plus will have the engine torque acting on it multplied many times. Much more likely to be heard at low speed, plus the forces acting on the lower bearing decrease as you go upthe gears.

Get one that's confirmed good from somebody trusted, I bought one that was Ment to be perfect and it was way way worse than the one removed.
Rich w said he had to strip it and it was full of leaves and all sorts of debris, he fitted it for me when he out the low comp engine in.

The penis I bought it off from Grantham didn't even drain all the oil out I ruined a brand spanking new insignia hire cars boot carpet and trims taking it home, yes I known there s**t anyway lol, off topic but them new ones look really goodSmile

The thing I realised is the mid box is also making a noise as well, Think the baffles have gone.

This means theres something coming form the gearbox
Something from the mid box
And something from the heatshield on the engine.

All of this gives someone NAFF all chance of finding where the sound is, I'm still apprehensive about getting a box just incase its something else.
Wonder if I should get the exhaust sorted first really, both to fix the new noise coming from there and to make it quitter to aid hearing the problem I have

wont be any baffles in the centre box, get it on a ramp and check the clamp.
