Hi folks,

Well I finally got my suspension change finished, new track rod ends,new drop links, new top mount bearings, second hand genuine pug springs, brand new billy B4's and new nuts and bolts all round.

So after what has been a nightmare and spending all day today in gale force winds getting drenched, i finally lowered the car back onto its wheels to find it now sits several inches higher than it did before, the old springs were standard pug and the ones I've just put on are standard pug too just with half the miles.Prior to the change I could just fit 2 fingers in the arch gap and now I can fit my whole hand including my thumb.

I know it will settle down but not by 2 inches or so surely. The other strange thing is, when I'd changed one side the car sat at its old '2 finger' height and its only since I changed the passenger side that BOTH sides now sit so much higher. I took it for a 2 minute drive and theres a big knock knock knock when turning right, Ie.putting load on the newly fitted passenger side. I also lost some gearbox oil in the change but I expected that.

My only thoughts at the moment are that perhaps because the tracking will now be out due to the track rod end change,its somehow stopping the car being lower. Or perhaps an issue with the ARB?

The drop links are the same length,the tracking is miles off as the car pulls all over the place.


Any advice would be massively welcome as I'm completely fed up with it now.

I'd be looking at your coils and how there sat in the top pan/mounts. If there not sat right and home could explain all of this.

They are sat all nicely lined up in the top mounts, its all very strange.

Did you check the spring length of the old spring against the new spring before you fitted the new springs? As above if they are not sat correctly this could cause incorrect height but the spring would be sat well cocked and would of taken a lot of co pressing to allow the top mount to be fitted. As you say the car will settle but not 2 inches I wouldn't of thought. Check to see that the springs are situated correctly on the strut and report back

Are the struts located in the hub? There's a tab on the back that slides into the hub to allow correct fitment.

Struts are properly aligned and fully home in the pinch bolt slot. I bought the springs from a member on here, they are genuine pug and came off his gti-6 where they had been from the factory.

Just checked my messages,they came from pete-gti who seems to be a well respected member and im sure wouldnt have sent me the wrong springs.I'm going to go out and see how it sits now and measure the gap.

    Ok so I just measured the gap, both sides are 180mm from the top of the cyclone to the arch.

    OK so I rechecked the springs and they're sat nicely in the top cup and lined up properly. I'm baffled.

    Do the bottom of the shocks sit flush... or there abouts in the hub?

    By proud do you mean they stick through the bottom of the hub? They are about a centimeter up from the bottom of the hub,should they be further in?

    Yeah, it sounds like you're having the same issues as myself and a few other members are having. The drop link tag etc is right... but either their datum is wrong or the shock is too short and the datum is wrong

    You've got to be kidding me, this would explain both the height issue and the knocking noise.

    So what is the bottom line? I'm going to call the seller tomorrow but whats the point if the ones I get in return will have the same issue. I don't want to knock off the tab as 1. I shouldn't have to on a brand new product and 2.the droplink tab won't be right.

    No it was on standard springs, the tyres are correct and haven't been changed.

    They've come off pete-gti car so I know they're right.I'll look at the colours in a bit anyway.
