Could people please cast their eyes over this lightened flywheel and give an opinion on it's condition and whether it's usable or requires work.

The fact the friction material on the clutch fell apart probably didn't help LOL

If the clutch let go with a bang it might be worth crack testing it otherwise it'll be fine. Will it clean up with wire wool or similar? Is there a lip on the inner and/or outer edge of the friction surface? I'd say at most it will need a small skim to clean up and flatten the friction surface, and therefore possible a skim of the same size to the mounting bolt face to keep the step distance the same.

It will probably clean up ok. I'm intending to whizz over it with some brake cleaner. I just wanted to show a photo of it in it's raw state rather than cleaned up.

I shall do that and check for lips.

    Crack testing sounds technical.

And probably unnecessary too, just flywheels make a right mess if they let go!

That's all I was worried about is a lip on the mounting face a refaced surface would make it all good most definitely.

You just buy some special spray and spray it on. If there are any cracks it will show up

The left portion on top pic looks like it has a bit of blueing which could indicate overheating.

Definately worth having it checked to make sure its straight and parrallel...

Yeah it's a TTV flywheel (Which Rich is the sole distributor for) bought from Rich.

The square cuts are correct as per pics shown by Rich in this thread (Post #58)

    http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=142586&page=3

Was bought early 2013 iirc so should be later type - no starter teeth issues.

I'm sure Rich will be able to confirm if yours is one that's come from TTV.

Do you want to take some measurements and cross reference it with mine? Worst case scenario is you might have the flywheel for a different marque LOL

The differences between the round-bottomed and square bottomed inductive pick-up teeth must just be a small variation between batches.

It will be down to the type of cutting tool used for milling the gaps between the pick-up teeth - the round spaces will have been done with a round or bull-nose cutter, the ones with the square profile will have been done with a square nosed / plug type cutter.

The flywheel in the photos looks OK - it's clearly had some hard clutch use, hence why it has the heat-marks and the friction material has broke up. It should be fine though, it's worth getting it spun up to make sure there's no distortion.

Cracking shouldn't be an issue - it's likely to be a bigger issue on cast flywheels rather than those machined from a solid billet of steel.
