Say you found yourself with a GTi6 but have no keys - how would you personally go about getting it running?

Basically I've bought a GTi6 with no keys. I supplied the engine to the previous owner a while ago - but I want to be sure it runs well before moving it on for piece of mind.

I've another ignition barrel and loom which I've been using to get power, test the electrics etc but now I'm keen to start it up.

One suggestion has been to cut immobiliser wires.

What I do have is a spare soft unlocked ECU and 205 GTi6 wiring loom. My idea is to unplug the existing 306 loom from the engine and perhaps unplug the transponder box so I don't risk my soft unlocked ECU locking and plug my 205 loom with brown plugs. I obviously don't care for having the gauges working, and I recall reading that only a couple of wires on a 205 need connecting to physically start the '6 engine so my intention would be to have the 205 loom connected up with the brown plugs in the bay and apply feed to the appropriate wires.

Does this sound achievable? I'm not electrically minded so if putting a wire or two directly from the battery to the (presumably starter and ignition) pins on the brown plugs is a bad idea - please shout!

Can't you unplug the transponder fit your unlocked ecu and fit the barrel?

If someone can confirm that's possible, then that would be very handy.

    Whilst I think of it...

You can remove an ECU with just the ignition on and it will be soft unlocked for 205 use etc - so before I do anything, can I turn the ignition on with my new barrel and key and remove the ECU for 205 use, or because it's not got the correct key chip, it won't be possible?

No it needs the correct chip in the key to unlock it buddy. You will need to unplug your transponder then fit soft unlocked ecu :-)

Side question, what are the differences/ limitations of a soft unlocked ecu vs a regular unlocked one?

From what I believe, a soft unlocked ECU is ideal for fitting to something like a 205 with a gti6 engine as it has no immobiliser, or even a 306 if you disconnect one of the transponder plugs - although you'll then have no immobiliser.

A properly unlocked ECU will go into any 306 with ECU problems and not re-lock so you can retain your immobiliser.

And it's that easy to soft unlock an ecu? Ignition on disconnect ecu, done? I've got an external immobiliser so not to worried about the factory one.

Yeah you don't need to start it, just ignition on and pulling the plug off the ECU does it.

What is your reasoning for wanting to soft unlock it?

As my friends would say #becauseracecar LOL making a track car for Tarmac rallies and want to get rid of the key barrel and use switches in the centre console so my co driver can turn the car off easier in event of... My Incapacitation. This way I can run the ecu I've got now rather than buying an unlocked one or aftermarket ecu and getting it remapped.

So once I have it soft unlocked, I can just remove everything connected to the black box and the collar then put my switches in?
