Hi folks,

The gear change on my new gti6 feels really nasty. The throw seems really long, it's notchy and going into 5th it feels dry and creaky and like I'm pushing the stick along sand paper.

Oil wise I have no idea what is in it, I haven't had the time to change it yet. What else can wear in the gear change?Maybe a knackered gear linkage or bush?

I'm sure putting the correct pug oil in will improve it but I still don't think it will be as I want it, what else am I best replacing?

Cheers.

Total / pug gear oil will always make these smoother however sounds like its worth changing the 3 linkages on the back of the box.

I'd also say the rubber ball on the subframe which the main long gear rod goes over could do with some grease. These can get dry and cause every movement to become stiff.

Cheers Armz. Whats my best bet with linkages? Are standard Pug ones expensive? I keep hearing about Miles (assuming a member) linkages but I don't want anything thats going to be hassle to set up or introduce any unwanted noises. Do they allow you to shorten the throw as I would like that a lot.

They are similar price to standard ones to be honest but much better as they remove any play between them. However their a wee but more difficult to fit as they have extra little fiddly clips that go on the outside as well to stop them falling off.

Some people have said they can create vibrations in the cabin through the gear stick but I've always put loads of grease inside them (standard or uprated) and never had an issue. Only issue I ever had was one unwound itself twice so make sure their done up tight!

As far as I know they are set to the correct length but are adjustable. But I don't think shortening them changes the throw at all you would need to buy a quickshift.

This bolts to the selector arm on the back of the box and the lower down the arm you fit it the shorter it makes the throw.
I've got one for sale but personally I found it made for a notchy gear change. I shortened the length of the gear lever itself and use miles linkages and gear change is spot on.
