I cut up an old socket so I could compress the washers by placing the calliper and socket in a vice and still get the pin through.
Like so....

and here's a picture of a manky old calliper, hope you can see which way the spring goes.

you will understand this once you start dismantling them, but without a tool like this you will struggle in a bad way. i would do this again no problem in about 10 minutes per side. people who say it's ballache don't improvise with makeshift tools and are most likely salads Razz

you need to compress the shims whilst you reattach the spring. you can't compress it and leave a void for the spring without a tool like that. it's a 21mm socket set i cut down leaving two prongs still there. worked flawlessly. don't be tempted to struggle and leave shims out, as you'll lose efficiency and it's a bodge

they go back how i've got them in my diagram. it's fiddly but not impossible

Hi im currently rebuilding a rear caliper for my car. I got the part as a refurb and don't think it was put together correctly as the handbrake doesn't work on the passenger side at all. I was wondering there is a ceratin way the shims have to go in and what way the cam should face when build properly. Thanks

Not sure about 6 rear callipers but most with a handbrake mechanism will not work if the handbrake lever has been pulled before the piston has been pumped out. Basically if you pull the lever when the piston fully retracted it disengages the machinism.

In order to reset the handbrake mechanism all you need to do is wind the piston fully inwards again and then back out at least half a turn sometimes a full turn and it should then work.

Not sure this applies to these callipers but worth trying before you dismantle it.
