Been looking at e46 m3 my self , personaly I would go for a manual the over the smg models also there's the rear subframe to check as there prone to crack also make sure its had its first service at bmw .. To save a few quid get one thats hads it discs and pads changed as there can be expensive , check for rust under front wings as well , not to clued up on the s4,s tho I nearly swapped my 1 series msport for a m3 last week end but it was a proper dog in the flesh

Not sure about the b6 range but my mate had an s4 and the timing chain stretched..... What ever car you go for there will always be common faults so just make sure you do your research first, both of those cars are going to cost a fortune for parts so your buggered either way!

Get one of these, bloody great things, you have to check them well though and they are old now.

Same as. The SMG box is horrible around town, and slow moving traffic. Manuals are harder to come by, tho.

had both an e36 m3 evo and e46 m3's and they are awesome cars. the e46 was more comfortable and modern but not as quick in my opinion. the e36 evo was absolutely ruthless but the e46 sounded better with the titanium exhaust. watch out for everyone on the internet warning you about vanos units without any prior experience of them Roll eyes

Had an e46 m3 for three years, main things are tyres if you have 19",standard brakes are expensive, high mileage models do suffer with head gasket problems and all models will eventually crack the boot floor (no help from manufacturer over 10 years.)

In three years I had to change alternator (500 quid). That was the only thing that went wrong for me on engine. I had SMG never had any issues to note. Miss it sooooo much!

I drove S4 with 400hp, you can engage to 6th gear in 30kph and drive all the way to 317 kph.
it had the most smooth acceleration i'v ever seen.
& it's reliable car, far more the the M3.

yeah sounds about right, from my notes my M3 had: front springs, rear shockers rebuilding, rear top mounts, RTAB's, diff seals, fuel pump, front wing got kicked in by johnny dangerous, vanos unit got rebuilt twice, some sensor at the back of the head which the full engine got took out for because it needed drilling out and a new thread tapping in, and then i needed some new heater motor which was worth doing whilst engine was out. also £2800 in Eagle F1 tyres

so yeah, audi is a good bet LOL aren't they a V6 or are we on about the slightly newer V8 ones here? didn't they change around 2002-2003?

Clutches I would say more than likely, they don't have a big clutch to be fair and most are modified so running a lot more power, insurance isn't to bad, I pay £300 fully comp with a guaranteed value of £25k

Clutch problems or not that would still look better being pushed home than a 306

The s4 is in my opinion not the performance all rpunded the m3 is. Its slightly understeery in comparison. Id be all over a E46. They are likely to become more sortafter over the years as well and i really dont see them falling in price any time soon

Out of curiousity have you driven both cars? Or is it the internets opinion?

I can see E46's continuing to drop in price as there are still a lot about. If you're concered bout depreciation I'd go for an E36 Evo.

S4 avant with a map on it would be a good all rounder, the recent 3.0 supercharged ones will match the pace of an RS!

I was looking at the s4 avant 4.2 v8. We dont do a lot of mileage so petrols not really the issue. Theres alot more space for the nipper in the back of the audi. I sat in the back of an m3 for 3 hours and im sure im an inch shorter now. Thought id just check on here to see if anyone had experience with them before I looked any further.

but the m3 is a coupe and the avant is an estate LOL so can't compare spaciousness?!

the e46 m3's prices are plummeting but the e36 3.2 evo's are going up

i like the older shape S4's, the nogaro blue 2.7 ones

i prefer the m3's though incase you didn't notice Razz

Yes but you can abandon a 306 at the roadside and nobody will bother nicking it. LOL

Driven both, M3 is in my opinion a class above. Good manuals will hold their value now for a while. The E46 is probably the second best M3 and has one of the best engines ever in my opinion. Id love an E36 EVO though as they have a certain stealth appeal.
Its a performance bargain at around 8500 for a good early manual.

I think the m3 I drove was brilliant, loved the smg gearbox. Round here it seens everyone has got them. I think the e39 looks older than it is to be honest I have considered it. It does seem for the price the audi is cheaper in general
