Right my rad fan doesn't work iv taken the cover off the fan relay housing and found this wire just wrapped around the other wire.....

with that wire joining the main loom that comes from the main engine loom plugs like so..

so that defo not right lol any idea what that is??

Also just bought some slimline fans would it be easier just to wire these in and remove the fan cowling completely?? What the easiest way to do that if it is the way forward.

they havnt worked since iv had the car so....

thanks

I had a similar thread recently....and no one responded, so don't worry. Sounds like we have similar problems with rallye fans! I also had some dodgy wiring like yours (inherited from previous owners) and needed to sort it out in order for fan to work. I ended up salvaging the loom from a breakers then stripped out all the botched wiring in my car. I managed to plug the new loom into the fan and into the rad but the third connection into the main loom seemed to be slightly different (like male to male pins). I'm a stage further forward but the fan still doesn't work yet!

Any info you have would be great

Chris, do you know if the Rallye setup is similar to lesser 306 models or is the fan wiring loom different/unique to the rallye? (sorry Mark, not trying to hijack your post here Thumbs up )

Remember the GTi6 has the twin fan setup and the Rallye has the single fan, although I think the shroud in the same in both models.

rallye would be the same as a non turbo diesel and similar, the TD non AC setup still has has twin fans but controlled by a thermoswitch.

The loom I stripped out the breakers yard seemed to be ok on two of the three connections but had multi pins on the third end, which clashed with pins on the plug i was trying to connect to. I was expecting pins and plugs at that connection. I'm not sure what model I got it from but it was definitely not a Rallye or a TD.

right more investigating today...found that the rad switch on the rad itself had broken wires so replaced using new terminals on the ends....done. got live to the switch and if I earth my test light then press on middle (white ) wire double speed fan cut in but still now joy cutting in when hot....aaarrrggghhhh annoying these little thing can be ay!!! lol

may just wire my slimline fan to a switch where the headlamp level should be at side of steering wheel and be done with it!!!

dual speed single fan with resistor for low speed controlled by a thermoswitch.
