Author Subject: Fitting new steering rack - remove subframe?!

Just after a bit of advice.

I want to fit a 2.6 steering rack, and eventually need to fit a new clutch. Do I need to remove the subframe to do either of those? Ideally want to fit the new steering rack first then do the clutch later on but if the subframe needs to be dropped, or makes the jobs a lot easier, then I'll do them at the same time.

Any advice?? Also was going to do them myself, do'able with only one pair of hands?!

You will prob need to drop the subframe to do the rack so while it's out the way might as well drop the box. If you have never done either then good luck the box is a swine every time and needs 2 people. I would defo in list the help of someone who knows what they are doing

as far as i'm aware you have to take subframe off.

no need to drop the subframe but loosening it will help.

clutch Is defo 2 man job to get box back in,iv just done mine on my own and getting the box back in and clutch fork lined up was a right b**ch on my own!!!
Alsoif never done anything like that before,get some one who has to help/get them to do as is fairly big job!
Just drop subframe a lil to make easier as welshpug said,but doesnt need to be fully removed Thumbs up

We managed to get the steering rack out without dropping the subframe but then we had the engine out so was much easier to move around. It's possible to pull it out of the passenger side but you will need to remove the 2 pipes that connect the ram to the rack in order for it to fit.

Dropping the subframe a bit might be easier.

Thanks guys, sounds like i'll just do it all at the same time.

Changed saxo/106 gearboxes by myself before so might give it a shot as cant imagine the 306 box is a lot heavier?! - my main worry was whether there was anything that definitely needed more than 2 hands to do. I think my main trouble will be undo'ing the hub nuts myself, will have to get someone to step on the brake.

Do you have the spare steel wheel? If you can't source an assistant, pop that on as you can get access to the hub nut then with the car back on the ground and in gear, handbrake on etc.

    Good shout, will use the spare steel under the boot floor.

    Anyone have a rough idea of how long it'd take to drop the subframe?

    Probably leave the wishbones on the subframe and just undo the ball joints to drop it.

    Also, from looking underneath to remove it, it's just a matter of:

    - Disconnect the steering column UV joint with the rack
    - Remove the 2 power steering hoses from the rack
    - Disconnect the rear engine mount
    - Pop gear linkages off
    - remove 4 rear bolts, and the 4 13mm bolts on the front subframe cups and the frame is good to drop?

    might I suggest tackling the front subframe bolts first as sometimes they like to snap. Smile
