So I have finally become a real gti6 owner, didn't really have much intention of buying one, but this came up on Facebook a couple of miles from me so thought it would be rude not to go and have a look:

very late 1999 V reg gti6, coventry registered
Nile blue
everything is Phase 3, apart from side strips and the orange indicators. weird car
130k, full service history from new, 3 previous owners, fairly recent cambelt etc
shagged rear beam and in need of a few service parts so I drove the seller down from his £800 asking price to £650 which I was happy paying as the apart from a small dent on the wing (which I have since pushed out) the bodywork is almost immaculate

got it back to my workshop and began to get it to my usual standard before putting it on the road.
First things first, what gti would be complete without red brake calipers

had some 16" direct fit team dynamics knocking about so of course they went on there

then my usual rear dewiper and a subtle debadge

then onto the ramp to sack off the knackered beam, rust proof, underseal then fit new beam along with baker bm solid mounts, new brake hoses, new shocks, refurbed heatshields, new discs and mintex pads

all fitted

moved onto the front then:

for some reason the gti splitter was missing, just happened to have one in my parts stash so that was fitted

started hoarding service parts, usual stuff like total 5w40, total gear oil, new wishbones, all filters, track rods and ends, new ngk sparkplugs as I guessed they hadn't been changed for a while and were probably wrong anyway ( I was right) fuel filter, mintex pads, discs, droplinks, struts, springs, brake hoses, topmounts and bearings.... probably more stuff ive replaced and forgotten about haha

The exhaust was the original item and incredibly rotten, the last 4 mot's had blowing exhaust as an advisory, so that was sacked off and replaced with a magnex

Fitted all my service parts and changed the fluids:

that's the gear oil that came out haha

Fitted new struts, mounts, wishbones, track rod ends and droplinks

picked up some ph1 gti6 seats to replace the awful ph3 items

also picked up a rallye aux setup to ditch my broken aircon plus some spares to get powderccoated :p

engine before:

engine after a quick clean, amazing how much dust gets in there

and thats about as far as ive got so far, will be fitting my interior bits over next week and seeing about getting the bumper scuffs repainted, also some blackmasks and cutom badges somewhere down the line leading upto fcs Smile

Nice to see you over this end mate. Hows the magnex? Fits better than mine. Think I sold you the wrong one LOL

Haha yeah, thought it was about time I became an active member now that I actually have a '6 haha

Loving the Magnex already and haven't even driven it on the road since fitting haha, need some stiffer exhaust mounts as it swings more than I like but other than that all is well :-)

Great work and you've got stuck in quickly. Like the arty photos too, you even manage to make a random pile of bits look good.

Haha, doing what I can to make replacing normal parts look interesting haha.

Just trying to get it to a standard where I'm happy to drive it so the sooner the better, literally every spare moment for the past month has been spent in the shed with the '6 lol

Oh definitely haha, I give zero s**ts about my Dturbo project at the moment just because I know I'll finish it and still won't be as fun as a standard gti6

Although there is a lot of faster hatches out there than the 6, there is just something about them that does make them such a great laugh to drive.

I just can't get over how much better they are to drive then any other of the 306 range, just feel so much better balanced and more willing to go around corners harder, and I've only driven mine so far with a shagged rear beam and collapsed p bushes!

Buzzing to drive it now that everything's new :-D

Yeah massive difference, I replaced all the front suspension on mine with new OE stuff and it feels brilliant now, but to be fair it felt pretty good even with the old shagged stuff. I particularly like how it is so adjustable mid-corner. Never fails to put a smile on my face.

I'm curious to see how I get on with the solid beam mounts, never driven a 306 with them fitted before but I had them around so thought I'd give them a go haha.

Got a Baker bm bottom engine mount somewhere I need to fit, noticed that the standard mount has got a bit soft

Yeah absolutely haha, got some brand new ph3 fogs on order, I'll fit once the bumpers been repainted :-)

Another weird Peugeot parts bin item, ph3 crystal lights but ph2 frosted glass fogs

I thought that too but everything else on the car is totally original, the chap I bought it off had it for over 5 years without modifying it and he bought it off some old guy down south somewhere so I'm wandering if any of the previous 2 owners would have bothered changing them, I'm sure it was a parts bin special being built at the beginning of ph3 production

I do have some rallye blanks somewhere but I haven't decided on whether I want them or not yet, kinda like the idea of a full fat gti6 fogs n all

It's too easy to get distracted with '6 parts aha

It's turning more into a collection of my favourite parts on one car

Tonight 's progress:

Changed the fuel filter, relieved to see the fuel coming out of it was clear and not full of muck

Then set about removing the rotten original airbox, absolute bas**rd to get off when all the bolts have seized into the wing, eventually got it off with some gentle persuasion from a hammer :-P

Treated the inner wing where it had started to get a bit flakey as a side effect of the rotting airbox

New bwarp filter needed, knocked up an induction kit from parts I had lying around

Silicone elbow with hole punched in piece of copper pipe to attach the oil breather to

Oil breather hose liberated from an xud, perfect for what I need

Perfect bend under the top rad hose and a bfo plumbing clamp around the throttle body

Got a aluminium 45 degree bend with a k&n ramair filter on the end, the original air intake conveniently comes out in the same place :-)

Need to construct a splash guard for the filter now, don't want a hydrolock incident

Decent tyres on my pro races

Also drained and flushed the coolant as it was looking pretty old, just need to refill and bleed tomorrow

Got the rad flushed out, refilled and bled, gave everything a quick check to see if it was tight then went for the trial run.

It's a bit lower on the front than I expected, but after driving around the estate a bit the beam settled down to the proper height and pulled the front up a couple of mm so looks how I want now.

Nothing scrubbing or catching lock to lock or over bumps so happy days

Noticed the exhaust was blowing slightly so had the mission of getting it back on the ramp , all sorted :-D
