So, I get a rattle at 3k (now 4k) revs at idle, is this a heatshield or something?
Cheers

Not when its a petrol, and youve got to get into it by cutting then get someone to weld it back up, may as well get a new one for a bit more, fair enough on a HDI but not a petrol

I'd suggest jacking the car up and shaking the exhaust at various points and seeing where it hits a heatshield or which bit has rattly insides.

Its not the coil pack cover bolts 6waysforward as ive tightened all but one of them fully up (the other tightened up 3/4 of the way and didnt want to turn any further) and the rattle is still there at 4k now

Oh well, worth a shot.
It happened to me a few years ago and i had the car on a ramp 3 times to find it. It was only by chance i noticed one or two of the cpc bolts were loose causing the cover to vibrate and sound like a headshield rattle.

I have an idea its the heatshield if its went from being heard at 3k to 4k now, sounds the most logical

My heatshield used to vibrate, I checked the bolts and they were all tight, I then slackened them off slightly, wiggled it about a bit and retightened, noise gone Smile

Have you checked the exhaust isn't too close to any of the heat shields under the car ? Check the cat as well as aftermarket cats usually are a poor design at sit close to the heat shield

Had this many times with a 6 engine usually either the heat shield behind the cam cover as said or it's the fire ring between the manifold and down pipe that's warn down causing a terrible noise at about 4K.

If your under the car you'd think it was the cat falling to bits but it's only the big round seal in the joint before the cat gone.
