Loads of charged info and kits on here. A more easy, practice conversion and probably more reliable. You won't be trying to always solve heat soak etc....

Depends what you want out of the car, budget and what your planning on using it for.

As said above, supercharged is normally easier and more reliable but i personally love how a turbo'd car drives.
But still, i supercharged mine for ease and cost.

I love my low boost '6 and until my charger died (which doesn't seem too common thankfully) I had lots of trouble free miles with really good mpg (not far off my parents MR2 Roadster with a 1.8 and vvti!). I think the Rotrex conversions are generally very reliable even at high boost because of the fact that the power curve remains very much like an NA car. Lots of power up top and no huge surges of torque like turbo cars can have at high power levels. Go for it, but be careful of 'charger rpm. I'm going to get my low boost remapped and might move the limiter to 7k to avoid overspinning the 'charger.

But it would be nice to see a nice turbo conversion. I think the way that binkas drove was spot on. So much more fun than a low boost. Shame it build quality was aweful. That one had loads of potential.

+1

I would much prefer a turbo conversion if done properly but cant afford £10K for it!

Are you suggesting that you can get a reasonably reliable turbo conversion done for under £5K...? If so.... Im interested!

All depends on how much power you want really i would have thought Yes

If you are happy with a minimal increase in power, say 250bhp then it would be quite cheap and perfectly reliable i would have thought.

It seems the 6 lump can handle up to 275 bhp quite comfortably but as we know, the low boost superchargers are down on torque (i dont know the lb/ft figures). Putting a 350 capable turbo in the mix mapped to 250bhp/ 250lbft is adifferent ball game. I imagine the gearbox would be the first thing to 'do-one'.

I'm suggesting that if you're competent with spanners and a welder you can build yourself a reliable turbo conversion for less than 5k.

This is a mate of mines, it's a standard engine with a t28, external wastegate running around 9-10psi off the spring, it makes 270 bhp and over 250lbft. It's cost him well under 3k including a new omex and mapping. Another 1500 would see the engine rebuilt with a lower cr and more power.
Does it need more power?? No Razz

It's fun but IMO it doesn't make the best road car, I'd go supercharger but not a rotrex.....

If you're fairly good with spanners I think a turbocharger conversion could be done for 230-275bhp for approx 3k and be fairly reliable. The key to getting it right is getting it right first time!

Exactly! If you throw the thing together with a 'it'll do' attitude it's never going to be reliable, you'll then spend more money sorting your f**k ups. Careful thought and planning and patience sourcing the right bits for the right money and you can do it very cheaply!

True, but lowest bhp/£.

Maybe less power but more usable and better for B roads and sounds a hell of a lot better too! Cool

Someone has done it? I've just shown you the pictures???LOL

As I say the engines completely standard, it's done over 120k and has a motor factors cardboard style head gasket.

No more pics at the minute, I'll get some next time I see him
