I was recently advised that there has just been or will be shortly a further check introduced in to the MOT system.

This requirement will be for a visual check that the car has a CAT in place regardless of whether it passes the emissions or not.

Just thought I would share this for info. I've seen a few posts on other places saying this just relates to diesels but I am not too sure...

Anybody else know anything more specific?

I believe it refers to both DPF's and CAT's and during the chat with my mate he didnt indicate either way whether it was just for diesels or not...

But if you do a Google search all I can find is people referring to diesels...

Just thought id share the info in case anybody has an upcoming MOT as I believe the changes take affect sometime this month.

Was changed last year! ANY car manafactured with a cat must have one in place otherwise its an instant fail!!

it used to be visual ie if it aint there it cant be tested likewise for air bag lights.

Did the first mot test I've done for a couple if months yesterday and one of the soecial noticed was confirming they have now brought in a visual check saying if the diesel vehicle should originally have had a cat or DPF then it must be present.

Basically if it's much like my Leon and is late enough that it should have some firm of cat and has an obviously cut and welded straight bit of pipe instead then it's gonna fail lol.

You could easily just remove the cat and hollow it out then refit and it will pass fine provided it passes the metered smoke opacity test.

Havevee as my mate that owns the garage said how are you as a tester meant to know if said vehicle came with a cat or not?
If it has a purpose made decat pipe then many wouldn't notice or bother if it passes the emissions but if it's obviously missing it will fail.

Before this came in my Astor hdi I used to have I did a smoke test and it sailed through first rev as it only smoked under load. That's with a remap as well.

As long as it looks cat like it shouldn't fail.

Would this mean that someone say had a car with a DFP system fitted as standard and they had removed it and re-tuned the engine to pass the emissons tests (I don't know if that means taking the CAT out too?), it would now be and instant fail? I have heard of a few people that have done this to PSA diesel engines.. Or is the CAT seperate to the DFP system?
