Hi guys. Last MOT I had a rear left caliper grabbing on my advisories. I changes the pads for the test and it seemed to be alright for a while but it seems it's back and worse. If the car is parked up for a while, for the first mile of 60mph driving I get a vibrating which I feel through the car but not the steering wheel. I can also hear a scraping noise from the front right when it happens which seems odd as it's the wrong side of the car.

Got to work this morning and felt the rear left disc and it was much hotter than the rest. Do you think the vibrations and noises are because of the grabbing caliper? Like I said it sounds like it's coming from the front right but I get no wobble through the steering wheel which I would get if it was the front end presumably?

Many thanks
Matt

Sticking calipers can cause noise and vibrations.
The noise from the front right may be that caliper sticking ever so slightly as well that wasn't noticed by the testing station, or something else wrong with the front right, but in any case, the sticking caliper on LR is something you should get sorted.

Do the rear caliper and see if that sorts it. The front caliper(s) might be sticky as well. I ended up replacing all four of mine. I got exchange reconditioned rear calipers on ebay for a really good price, £57 each IIRC. Looked brand new and work perfectly.

Yep, I bought a pair of these based on your experience, brilliant units, you wonder how they can do them for the price. Smile

Well isn't a rebuild kit about 20 pounds?

Yeah, but these units come out looking *brand new*. You wouldn't know the difference.

Also, factor in the postage is FREE as well, and you get £15 per caliper back as surcharge on top.
Cracking deal! Cool

Jord -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160948896800

Same seller also has front ones for £58.09

Stan - The cashback offer seems to have disappeared from their eBay listings. I remember looking at these a couple of months ago and the cashback offer was still there so they must have had some problems with it since.

That's frustrating, as it knocked £30 off the price of a pair.

Maybe they've stopped taking old units in exchange then.

Not the end of the world, can still use their packaging and sell them on ebay. I'll message the seller about the cashback and see what they say.

He won't know until he receives them and sees whether there is an option to send the old ones back for a surcharge. Wink

Oh yeah not disputing that it was a good deal, and when you put it like that and including postage you're right it is rock bottom pricing really!

WTF?

Why has nobody suggesting doing that thing we refer to as maintenance. Brakes stick when the grease has dried out. Rears are bad for it. The boot is a piece of p**s to change if it's split around the piston, and red rubber grease in there will last years.

fix it before buying a replacement imho. Look in my project thread towrards the end, it's easy.

I'm only asking as a couple of people have asked me to quote them on a rebuilt axle with new brake parts

Got a message back from the seller.

"Yes if you use your Invoice number and send it to the email addresses on the bottom of the invoice you will be sent an RMA form which has the address you need to send them back to in order to get your surcharge refund."

So that's pretty sweet. Presumably still £15 a side back, brings it down to £42 a side! Not bad at all.

Tvrfan007 - Would have given that a crack if I'd have known but calipers already on their way and too excited about shiny calipers to turn back now Razz. Will be nice to know the rear should be sorted for quite a while now anyway.
