hello guys, going to fit my new thermostat and plastic housing as the old one has cracked, I see there's 2 nuts to hold it in place,so would it be a case of bolt off and bolt on and then bleed system, also when I do a gravity bleed can the car be off and will it still be bled correctly, another question is I know the bleed point on the thermostat and one on the radiator but the one on the heater matrix is that the one with 2 pipes going in to it and is the bleed opening the one that looks like a wheel dust cap, just want make sure I'm bleeding right things and if anyone can put out a pic up of the heater matrix And it's bleed point will be greatful, thanks guys all advice appriciated

Hi Bazza,

Yes, the bleed point for the matrix is near the bulkhead on the pipe, exactly the same as a tyre valve cap. Yes

Gravity bleeding is fine, but bleed it whilst running as well to be sure. There is a guide in the FAQ section on radiator replacement and this also details bleeding in detail. Smile

No problem, I'd rather you get it done right than have further problems down the line. Smile

Personally, when I do it I open the rad one until I get only fluid flowing, then repeat with the thermostat one and matrix one. Smile

Right me again ( don't look disappointed) lol, well fitted new thermostat but I go a issue the one I took out was a bit rusty and had to use a flat edge screw driver to leaver it off the housing, how ever the new one I fitted I bled all air out system and took it for a drive, the temperature when drivin sits between 80-85 and when stand still it goes 90-95 is this ok because my last one was sitting at 70 driving and standstill kept going up I think lol so just want to know if this is the right new temperature both pipes on rad seem same temperature all the blew points are air free as I checked it again and again so any idea guys

Those sound like completely normal temperatures.
Sounds like the old one was potentially stuck open, or if it was cracked for a long time and let air in then the temperature readings from before you fixed it would have been wrong anyway.

No worries. Smile

The temp when travelling will be between 80-85 as the stat operates at 83c. Yes

When you stop, there is air flow to the rad so that's why the temp creeps up until the fans should kick in just after 95c.

Sounds like it's running spot on mate. Thumbs up

Just to add to this i think my thermostat is showing early signs of acting up sometimes the low speed fans come in really quite late and just recentky it crept up to the red before the fans came in.

So does this sound like a tired thermostat? I'm assuming if the fans were playing up they wouldn't work at all?

Thermostat has nothing to do with fan control

have you tried the brown sensor on the thermostat housing, unplugging it when car's running to see if fans spin up at full speed?

Smile when unplugged they go to high speed straight away. When driving the temp will sit slightly above 90 where as it should sit at about 85. It just recently seems to run warmer and given that it's winter that shouldn't be the case surely?

As I'm looking at the gauge now it's nearly getting to the red before the low speed fans come in.

Changed the stat and the car runs consistently 10oC cooler whilst driving. Before it would sit at 90 and now it doesn't go above 80. Also because of this the oil temps are also about 10oC cooler.

So this has made a massive difference.
