So, I decided to go for a late night drive and the car starts running on three and losing power so I turn around and head home slowly.

Then there's lots of noise, the engine cuts out and there's steam everywhere.

The timing side is covered in oil. I'll have a better look tomorrow, but I half expect a snapped belt and an oil hose cut

Sounds like it could have thrown a rod to me. You didn't go through any large puddles, did you?

I'm leaning towards the same thoughts as Rich - especially since you have oil everywhere.

Have you inspected the block in daylight yet this morning and see if you can see any holes?
It sounds as if possibly the small end failed (meaning the piston stopping and you then running on three) followed shortly by the now loose rod smashing it's way through the crankcase. Sad

It might not be, but it's difficult to find a plausible answer to it suddenly running on three, followed by loads of noise, cut out and steaming, covered in oil.

Obviously, without further investigation we don't know exactly what's failed as of yet.

However, if a small end has failed or a bearing shell has picked up and spun, questions have to be asked, why. It's an unusual failure, so I'd be interested to know the failure reason assuming that the engine has failed in this way. Yes

if there's no physical damage to the block then I'd surmise a pressure buildup,..
did you not get any warning lights up Dave?

No warning lights or sounds really!

But cylinder #1 is has smashed the plug to s**t so definitely a rod issue there!

Time to fit one of my spares now Sad

Yeah, I'll get the car to work tomorrow and start stripping the front end unless I can't contain my excitement, in which case I'll get the head off first

I'm annoyed, but not really all that bothered. I was planning on using the 205 this winter and taking the Rallye off the road, but aye, I wish it hadn't happened.

Pug_306, thanks but I have a few spare engines Smile

Jimmy, you got a low filter/rallye blank
