Just recently got a new HU for the same purpose as wanted to amp up some speakers and a sub. Hardly any of the stereos now days that halfords sell come with enough pre-outs. Luckily I managed to find one that came with 3 sets....

Other than that I dont actually have any advice so not quite sure why I commented.

Good Luck.

Easiest way is to get a head unit with pre outs to be honest. But you can get amps which take high level inputs from effectively speaker wires but its more of a ball ache to wire in than just using 2 Phono leads.

Cheaper lower end CD players don't come with any or they only come with 1 nowadays. The sony one I have had in my 6 and other cars for about 7 years has 2 pre outs a seperate sub out and an aux in on the rear as well. They don't make me like they used to lol

Yes matey use the rear one as sub but you'll need to switch on the Low Pass filter on the amp to stop the sub getting the full range of frequencies Thumbs up

Tell me about it.... I remember when you used to go to halfords and every info board was boasting about how many pre-outs the HU's have and what Wattage the speakers are. Now they dont mention any of that important stuff - just that it connect to ipod or blue tooth etc and you have to mess about searching on line to find out whether they have the important stuff or not and 9 times out of 10 they dont.

I would potentially say it depends how old the HU you are buying is.... When I bought my pioneer a couple of weeks back it came with the adapter cable I needed but I also needed to buy an Ariel adapter as well as an adapter to let me still use my stalk controls.

Sorry I cant help with your question on this one.

I've never come across a 306 without standard ISO connectors and I've owned various of all 3 phases. Most head units come with an aerial adaptor the 306 has a female connector standard but most units require a male.

Most of the head units Halfrauds supply are rubbish and well over priced. An after market head unit without pre outs? Dont waste your money.

As for high level input. Avoid. Pre outs FTW with regard to sound quality.

(Smug mode) my head unit has three 6 volt pre outs and dacs by Burr Brown.

AHEM!!! I bought a great head unit from Halfrauds not too long ago.
It has 2.5v pre-outs AND......USB Slot and AUX jackUnsure
No more CD's for me unless its an mp3 one full of songs. 8GB usb stick in the slot or can plug ipods in,or my phone, which by the way the HU also charges while plugged in which is bloody great i thinkThumbs up
Has very detailed settings,bass/mid/treb level-Bass/mid/treb Q factor AND Bass/mid/treb C frequency + Sub level & sub Q factor.
Oh yeah, retail was £179 and it was in the sale for £69Cool Cool

Sounds like you did well - probably the only person ever in the history of the world to get a bargain on Halfords ICE in fact. As an indication of Halfords prices, the nasty Autoleads head unit surround can be bought on ebay new for £4.99, Halford's price £14.99 in store, and the Alpine SXE-1725S direct fit speakers I have are £29.95 from several suppliers, Halford's price £59.99 (seen online). Plenty of profit margin there!!!!!

The problem is your HU doesnt have pre amped RCA outputs? The easiest and cheapest way, would be this:
