Afternoon All,

Just looking for a bit of advise. Took my 6 down to Carl the other week and one of the issues was my car overheats as the low speed fans dont come on and sometimes the high speed fans dont appear to come on either.

Carls had a look and said there was a load of crap stuck in the fans preventing them from spinning and thus eventually burning out the motors and recommended therefore replacing them.

Now my question is - Ive found what appears to be a decent priced set of rad fans with motors from a 1998 GTi6. Is there a difference between the rad fans from different years or phases? Or will a set from one 6 fit another irrelevant of year/ phase?

I would think if you have AC they are all pretty much the same but phase 1 may be different and use a fan switch in the rad rather than brown sensor in the thermostat housing and bitron ECU but I can't remember for sure. The fans themselves do unbolt from the cowling so could swap them from any phase that way if you needed to.

Cheers Armz this is the set - looks like its potentially what I need - but I've dropped them a couple of questions anyway to see what they come back with...

Looks like that should be fine just depends in the connections on the passenger side at the bottom. If their not the same thn just unbolt the 3 10mm's that hold each fan to the cowling and they'll be a straight swap.

As it happens I'm doing exactly that to a phase 2 6 this afternoon at work, one of the fans has been missing for years and having not long done a head rebuild we advised her that she should get the second one replaced.

A mate of mine had a phase 1 S16 he was breaking so took the fans from that but they don't use the bitron unit so have just removed one of the fans to bolt into the existing cowling.

Also while your there bridge pins 1&3 of your AC pressure sensor plug if your AC doesn't work. Will bring the fans on high speed when ever the AC switch is on. Just need to remember to disconnect the white plug on the AC pump if you do this so it doesn't engage.

Was going to try this a while back but could only just reach the plug on the AC Pump and therefore didn't want to disconnect it in case I needed to reconnect it in future.

Im guessing the white plug needs to be disconnected for this to work? as we tried it without disconnecting the plug and it didnt work - But I guess thats because the AC would have still been trying to kick in?
