And as a point that has already been made, the more advanced electronics on cars these days makes them even more likely to breakdown in my opinion. Yes
And in an unusual move, I actually 100% agree with you stan. LOL

Who'd have thought it Aaron? LOL

It's true though. Newer machinery is too complicated for it's own good. An older vehicle that is meticulously maintained will be a much, much safer bet any day of the week. Yes

I will never buy a new vehicle - I simply don't like them. They don't allow you to drive them properly with all their electronic trickery, it's bonkers.

For example, as many of you know I own a GSXR 1000 sportsbike. I have the 2005 model, which doesn't have *too* much electronic trickery on it. The same bike from 2007 model upwards has a three stage throttle setting. Modes A, B and C. Mode A is full power, Mode B is for the rider to engage when conditions are a little 'greasy' and it limits the power somewhat. Mode C is for the rider to engage for rainy conditions to severely limit the power.

The 2005 model I have is equipped with a similar system - it's called a throttle and I twist it as much or as little as I as the rider feel is appropriate for the conditions.

And that's a motorcycle. Cars are ten times as worse with their so-called 'driver aids' which is my opinion don't aid at all but simply annoy me as a driver.

My work van ('13 plate Renault Trafic) annoys me because it has a 'gear up/down' light which constantly appears on the dash telling me when to change gear! I don't need that, that's just irritating...

In a way you're right but also wrong. Yes newer cars fail but generally older cars fail more as parts wear out over time. Yes a well maintained older car can be very reliable especially as you have the luxury of proof that a certain car can be reliable because its proved itself as opposed to when it was new, you still had the same gamble as any newer car today. Also finding an older car that has been properly maintained is rare as it takes more than just a service history. I guess because 15yr old 306's are very reliable is the reason why they very rarely get broken for parts or scrapped Whistle

If you buy a brand new car you have no idea whether or not it is a lemon.
If a car has been running for a good few years and has been well-looked after the majority of glaring manufacturer faults would have probably presented themselves by then.

Why is it im seemingly the only person on here to not like BMW's in any shape or form? f**k me they are just boring... LOL
I personally would rather buy a 6, have all the extra cash to put into my mortgage. Cars are all a dead loss for money old and new. Just the old lose less. Smile

Oh and just for the record whilst we are discussing "new" car reliability my '13 plate Renault Trafic has started to play up today. Yes

Everytime you attempt to start it, it spins over really slow on the first crank (as if the battery was flat) and then spins over normal speed for the next 3 or so cranks until it fires. At the same time the dashboard clock resets itself. LOL

There is obviously a loose connection somewhere, but at only 16k covered I think it's a bit poor. Don't get that kind of behaviour from the Pug. Smile

Drive a decent BMW for a few weeks, then tell me you'd happily go back..

There's more to it than that too, I don't know what you do for work but turning up in a 10+ year old french hatchback with a loudish exhaust makes you look like a c**t. (No offense) Smile

Fair play, I just reached a certain age and realized that I looked like a c**t driving a 306.

Im with this guy! I had a brand new 63 reg 320D M sport for 2 weeks and hated every minute of it. Uncomfortable, nav/media was overly complicated, wasn't built anywhere near as well as the older BMs, was bloody noisy and juicy and it was hard work to drive for a auto.

Would never have one!

How anyone can say a E46 M3 is boring is beyond me.
My bother bought a minty minty low miler about 3 months ago, Absolutely standard all round.
It is the most insane sounding thing I have ever driven.
I absolutely love my six don't get me wrong.
But f**k me that is a car.
Seriously, The sound it makes is imprinted in my brain.

Driven an E46 M3 with the SMG box and the only thing i thought was good was the launch control. Other than that I thought it was s**te! Not particularly quick and very understeery ( of course that can be corrected by the loud pedal ) but when trying to be fast and tidy it wasn't very planted at the front.

Sounds like you dove a s**t one tbh.

My bros one you can basically drive like an utter bellend and you get away with whatever,
I would say that it feels faster than my mates e93 m3 convertible tbh as well.

Don't get me wrong at high speed its so comfortable that you don't realise how fast you are driving but that's build quality for you.
His is a manual as well.

Thing with the Mercs is the engines are epic but the gearboxes are a bit balls
