Hi Guys,

I recently moved to the UK, now I work at the Ford Dunton Technical Centre, and at the moment I have a 307 1.4 8V Whistle
Quite surprising, but this tiny engines moves the car quite well, but if driven hard it drinks more fuel than my VTS did
which is annoying...
So I would like to buy something else which would be good on fuel, yet a tad bit sporty so it won't feel like a boat on the track. I am not too worried about the performance, I want a light car with good suspension and brakes, power is not the main priority!

The bad thing is they did not transfer my NCB over from Hungary, so I had to start from scratch... Meaning cars like the 172 Cup are out of my window at the moment.

I am thinking about options like the C2 VTR (not the Sensodrive nonse), 106 Rallye etc...

Any suggestions? (I want a french car btw)

I found the 2000 fiat punto 1.2 16v and 1.4 16v sporting models to be excellent to drive. Not massively powerful (around 80bhp and 95bhp respectively iirc) but not bad for the engine size. The handle well, look good and fiats FIRE series of engines make the most awesome induction roar. Both are good on fuel and very cheap on tax/insurance. Not much money to buy either. Fairly well weighted steering, revvy engine and 6 speed box means they are a great little run about.

Doubt you'd go wrong with one of these. Thumbs up

Edit: just noticed you said you wanted to buy French. Guess that counts one of these out, but still, cracking little motor.

No Fiat for me, thanks Big grin Friend of mine has a Punto GTT, an UNO Turbo Ie and a Coupe 20V Turbo, and keeps a Suzuki Liana for the time when he has to drive out of the town, as that is the only car to guarantee the arrival Big grin

BTW. I was just looking at Saxo VTRs. What is the MPG on those?

Would love an other 107 1.0i, as mine had a decat, remap and it went really well, and driven carefully it gave me round 60MPG, but they are just sooo expensive!

106 rallye i'd suggest. Or for maximum cheapness, how about a saxo VTR/VTS?

Vtr returns around 35 - 40 on mixed driving. Run out of puff in high revs but as you'd imagine they handle brilliantly. Betteroff with a 106 xsi or an S1 rallye.

Would love a Rally, but they are very rare and expensive or ruined...

A 106 XSI is basically a Saxo VTR ain't?

Early models were 1.4 non cat. Nicer looking, more exclusive and I found the engine to be better.

106 XSi was 100 bhp, two engines, one 1360 non cat as mentioned, and the later 1598.

most VTR were 90 bhp, the xsi is quite rare now.

more rallyes about than the XSI, not expensive but as you say there's many messed and ruined examples, they don't wear their age too well.

I've just got a 1.4 205 as my daily. I can insure my 306 rallye for 490 and the 205 wants 570 to insure it! hahahaha

206 gti the 138bhp version. I paid £400 for mine, body work is tidy, its a quick little car as well to be honest. I was very surprised when I got in it and drove it. Also think daver6 was quite impressed with it too. Good on fuel and cheap to insure

Admiral were the most useful by the way when sorting my other half out. She'd had her South African license 8 years, and they considered the NCB from SA - introduced us with a good discount to start with, where most insurers wouldn't consider her license valid pre-conversion despite a straight swap to UK spec.
