Right I've been offered a mk5 golf Gti with the dsg gearbox. Remapped to 291bhp.

On a 55 plate.

Anyone ever had one of these? Do you guys think it's a good deal for my sc'd 306?

    Yeah, don't forget the Golf weighs 2 tonnes and even with 291hp it will feel slow... Wink

    If you're looking to keep the Golf for a while then sell it on, I'd say you need to think about Dan's comment and the obvious answer is to take the Golf as you will recuperate a good deal of money back when it comes to resale time. Yes

    Wayne's comments are also very valid, it won't be as quick though twisty sections and will feel cumbersome and heavy. Yes

    It really depends on whether you want to make more money come resale time, or have a better/lighter/quicker car in the short-term.

    Also it will be nice to have a nice comfy car to drive again, without having to climb over the cage to get out of the car. I think the golf will be easier to sell for what it's worth, as most people won't know what the pug is worth, they may just think it's an old Peugeot at the end of the day.

    Anyone had any experience with the dsg flappy paddle gearboxes?

    Also the pig is costing a lot to insure as all mods are declared, and it won't be driven in the winter so will save money aswell. Just gotta sell the vr6 caddy now aswell lol

    Personally, I HATE the DSG boxes. Yes

    So, you're supposed to be able to have an option of 'auto' gearbox or 'manual' (using the paddles) right?

    Wrong...

    You can have 'auto' and this works fine as an automatic gearbox. Yes
    You can have 'manual' and this also works fine *on the up-shift*.

    You can of course, manually downshift too. However, if you're braking (say for a roundabout) and the gearbox is set to 'manual' the thing starts down-shifting for you as if you're in auto mode.

    This I absolutely hate. If I'm in 6th in manual mode, heading down a dual-carriageway approaching a roundabout and I decide I want to slow down, come to a halt in whatever gear I like, and *then* change down to 1st ready to go, I should be able to. With the DSG, this is impossible.

    So basically, in summary, it's an automatic gearbox which allows you to manually up-shift as a treat if you select it. My missus has had a few of them now, but I would never buy one due to this. Thumbs down

    If im approaching a roundabout at speed i shift down via the paddles to use engine braking as its a lot of weight to stop on the brakes alone.

    I really like my DSG box; my only complaint is that i would like a slightly quicker shift.

    LOL at stan wanting to stop in 6th gear!!!

    What would happen if the dsg did not drop down the gears and your average driver arrives at a roundabout still in 6th gearRoll eyes and then goes to accelarate away?Thumbs down

    How many miles has it done?

    Lad at work had the dsg clutch pack changed in his audi at just over 100k miles, just under £1000 all in.

    They come check it! if it then fcks up they pay for it. costs a lot but worth it on that sort of motor!

    The mk5 chassis isn't all the bad in all honesty. Currently driving a mk2 Leon and it handles rather well.

    As for the auto shifting in manual mode revo do a remap service that stops it doing it and also tweaks a few other settings.

    LOL @ some of the comments in this thread, it's not a case of me *wanting* to come to a complete stop in 6th gear, it's more the point of I should be able to if I choose. I may want to approach in 2nd or 3rd, but if my speed is lower than a certain parameter then I can't which isn't appropriate in my opinion.
