Hello chaps,

I'm currently putting my axle back together and am at the stage of securing the torsion bars against the offset washer.

When doing this, the arms want to come out of the crossmember. They do tap back, but its obviously difficult to locate the bars when you're withdrawing everything at the same time! Roll eyes

So to really, I'm not too convinced that the arm to seal gap is correct it's around 5mm from memory? This seems consistent with my axle which is on the car but Mei's guide says 0.05mm or .002" which seems minute?

LOL, you certainly don't want the seal 5mm awaw from the cup, what's the point of having it if its like that?! Laugh my ass off

clearance is indeed 0.05mm.

fitting the torsion bar you should push the arms in fully against the seal, screw in the stud fully on the opposite end of the bar, slide bar in, fit offset washer, fit countersunk bolt which will pull the torsion bar back a few mm, place 0.05mm feeler gauge between seal and trailing arm cup.

push arm in, wind stud out on opposite side till it touches the cup in the crossmember, dont go winding it further as it'll push the arm out and increase the gap, fit the washer and 13mm halfnut, hold stud with large flat blade screwdriver and lock down nut.

job done, easy peasy.

0.05mm doesnt leave much for flexing of the trailing arms on the pivot point, possibly causing binding. Isnt it just a flexible seal that squashes when then gap is less than a few mm?

no, its a lip seal, the 0.05mm is to the body of the seal, the lip making contact before this.

I highly doubt that the arm shaft will flex and cause binding.

Fancy taking a picture of how the assembled seal etc looks? I appreciate that it needs to be set to that, but just a picture for reference would be good Smile

Silly question but... if the seal aint in contact, how does it seal?

you are setting the clearance to the main body of the seal, not the lip which is flexible.

Ah, okay. It just looks like the feeler guages are spacing the seal lip.

You force the seal lip up with the gauge to measure the clearance of the body of the seal not the lip as welshpug says. That way the rubber lip is in constant contact with the arm but there is enough clearance for movement.
