Hi,

I have a 205 gti with a quick rack, new steering UJ, new everything.

Now I haven't yet had the tracking done, the reason im not in any big rush to get it done is that the car drives straight and true, no pulling to left or right, which im surprised to get.

Now the steering wheel is slightly offset when fitted, i've tried to move it by one spline to the other side and yet that still makes the steering wheel too far over, as much as one spline would make.

Does anyone think a good tracking would sort this out or has centralising the rack not been done to a T ?

Cheers

alignment would sort it. everything is keyed anyway isn't it so even if it's wound all the way to the wrong side it'll level out centrally midway Unsure sounds like a tracking issue anyway. mine is like this now but it's not been tracked yet (it's on stands still) because i rebuilt the rack and put new TRE's on

I don't think they just do tracking, you go and usually have to wait a while, always busy which shows they are good uns. Id rather not have monkeys do the job, been there got the T shirt LOL

there's a tyre place near me that does tracking, take it there pay a tenner and then after take it to somewhere with a proper machine and let them put it right for £25, 4 wheel aligned cars are £40-£60 there.
I've done it and it was a mile out, but the same tyre place hammered knock on steel rim weights to the inside of my st220 alloys so that says it all really, bodging bas**rds

To track the car 'properly' the rack needs to be centred then move the steering wheel to suit. Non of this holding the steering wheel central then screwing one TRE in and the other out bull s**t.

What's the best way to centralise the rack or check its centred before putting on the steering wheel straight?

Measure the track rod ends from track rod to pivot (not threads, as they vary), when these are the same length both wheels will tow the same amount when the rack is centred, as long as the subframe and wishbones are straight.

Like if you had a rack to fit to the car and wanted to fit it central or just best to remove the steering wheel on the ramp before its aligned to make sure it's done properly.

No LOL

Welspugs explained it just fine. Ignore the steering wheel completely, set both TRE's so they're out the same amount then track the car up by adjusting both tre's equally rather than just one like most tyre monkeys would do. You want to end up with both tre's/track rods exactly the same length and the tracking at your desired setting. Then jump in the car and move your steering wheel to suit.

95% of tracking places will look at you gone out if you ask them to do this as they've no fecking idea about suspension geometry, to be honest it's just good practice IMO to have the rack perfectly centred.

I centered mine by turning rack when off the car all the way then half the amount of turns, then fit.

So will tracking sort the steering wheel splines so the steering wheel goes on straight ?

TRE are both in the same amount too.

Tracking won't necessarily make the splines sit in the correct position to centre the wheel. Once the tracking is set properly and the steering wheel set as close as possible to centre you could alter the tre lengths to put the wheel bang on in the middle but that's up to you.

You may think this seems a bit ott for tracking but in isolation centreing the rack makes a noticeable difference to the steering.

Mine was centred but im wondering if it could be a splines amount out.

I'll get it pro tracked and see how it goes. As said it steers like did was on old oe rack, drives very stright too.

VTS Gbox rack done before engjne etc was fitted.

I understand the importance of a centered rack and tre having the same distance, i researched loads on it.

You'll also understand that you might not be able to get the steering wheel perfect then Wink

Is it a square drive or a splined rack?

It's a faff but you may get it in the middle by Turing the coloumn on the rack 90 degrees then seeing if you can adjust the s/wheel to a better position

I'm one of these people who need the steering wheel to be perfectly straight when in a straight line otherwise it *really* bugs me...

So if you got someone like say prodrive to perfectly centre your rack and track the car perfectly, then say they removed your steering wheel and repositioned it 90 degrees from centre, would your tracking be out?
