No cam sensor on the XSi. No

I'm thinking probably an electrical fault, such as either a bad Earth or battery terminals loose/corroded?

old plugs were fine (good colour) when i replaced them 2 weeks ago. so i dont think its them.

the battery terminals are fine. the earths i havnt checked.....where are they all in the 306? dont wanna miss one by mistake/inexperience

if it was an bad earth wouldnt i experience more "random problems" rather than a specific startup issue?

thanks for the help
jim

thnaks for the help so far

right ive fitted a new cam sensor and half the problem is gone.

the engine will turn over and try to fire immediately instead of a few seconds of cranking it over and then it starts fireing.

however upon fireing instantly the first few seconds of running are still... sluggish with it possibly cutting out. after it gets past this it runs fine.

if i try a 2nd cold start (if there is such a thing), i let it run fine for 20 secs then turn it off and on again the issue isnt present.

im thinking fueling and fuel pressure is initialy lacking and taking its time to come through.
ive had a new fuel filter,

so that only leaves, injectors, fuel pump, fuel pressure sensor, fuel pressure regulator....anything else.

anyone got any magical inklings as to which may be the culprit with this new update?

If you have a failing HG, you will most likely have coolant seeping into the cylinders when the engine is cold and therefore it will take a while to catch from a cold start as you will need to burn off the moisture first. Yes

However, you would start to slowly see the coolant level going down. If this is the problem then you would have the issue when you run the engine at first, but then if you turn it off and back on again it will have cleared the moisture and the fault would go away.

Do you have any pressure in the cooling system after the engine has been sat not running say after 12 hours? If so, that's a classic sign the HG is failing. Sad

thanks for the help so far. heres an update/recap..... im not loosing water, im not loosing oil

ive changed the map sensor, and the fuel pump relay, fuel pressure regulator. its a new lamdba sensor, new spark plugs, the icv is clean and functioning, i dont have any air leaks on the intake or exhaust.

and ive now come to the conclusion of pants fuel pressure from the pump. its primes but its a very quiet nie on unhearable/unfeelable noise, instead of the usual loud one that virbates the car a bit like in my other 306's

ive asked about a new pump in another thread. not realising i may be able to remove the pump unit itself from the pump housing in the phase3 xsi and put it into the housing on my phase one gti? can i?
