the aircon on my gti has never worked. had a pipe missing when i got it. ive pulled the rest off and now the only bit left is the air con pump itself.

i will be getting around to removing it. just a bit lacking on funds for the tensioner kit atm.

however.....around about 3k of revs+ the pump makes a horrible "metallic death rattle noise" it honestly sounds like a loose heat sheild or similar. i can turn the pump freely when the engines off and the bearings seem fine. more liek theres a loose/well worn rattly part inside.

my question is how likely is this to cause catastriophic failure/excess damage? worst i can see is it jams and i throws a belt or burns one out. or can it get worse than this?

is this another thing to add to my "priority list"?

cheers in advance

jim

surprised you've not engineered a hollow aircon pump which will still keep the roller but have no purpose! LOL

It has a vicious clutch on the pulley, so I'm guessing the bearings have started to go in this as you won't be turning the pump itself whilst the engine is running if the air-con system has no gas in it.

That's why no ones A/C works, the pump blows holes in the pipework.

in responce to rikkey. i did have "Pipe dreams" for pushing some high pressure steam through it.

steam supercharger effect.........of sorts :S more like steam direct power drive assistance.

a heat recover system is essentially aircon in reverse. so in theory, yes. in practice, not by a long shot.

so in theory if i got it to work (add some/minimal power through fan belt) in practice i dont think id want to or be able to safely add much power through a fan belt.

so im binning that idea right now.
